97 sx700 Pull cord Guide help

Hello all,

I just picked up my first Yamaha sled and need some guidance with the pull cord guides location. Currently my pull cord is rubbing on the chain case and I believe that there is a guide missing. Could anyone post pictures of their sled to get an idea on what parts to buy? or maybe I can fabricate something up to not chaff my pull cord and cause it to break all the time. Any advice would be appreciated!!

There's no guide missing.. It's running on that little tab on the top of the chain case right?? There is a hole on said tab too. That's how it's supposed to be and it drove me crazy as well...The older vmax's (I believe 94-96 had a guide) I picked up one off fleabay that looks like piece of small bent tube, but I've also seen them that look like a piece of wire bent that formed a circle. I replaced my recoil rope with Amsteel also. ;)! The guide is--> Yamaha part number 8BB-15758-00-00

Yeah id be interested in seeing a picture as-well. I called the local Yamaha dealer and ordered a guide from them. It was only $20 so I went ahead and ordered it to see what I am missing on the sled. They said that there is a guide near the chain case. I will snap some pictures of the setup I have now and when the new guide is installed.

I have it. It's a spring that attaches to the recoil housing and basically flops loosely on the other end. I was thinking about replacing it with a piece of rubber tubing all the way up to the pull handle. Probably have to poke some drainage holes in it. I honestly think Yamaha assumed most of these sleds would have e-start and didn't worry much about a pull start guide for a mere backup means of starting. Seems like a poorly thought out design.

This is what my setup looks like. It doesn't seem right to me but I could be wrong. This is before I received the parts from the dealer and the pull string is not attached just sitting there to get the idea of where it is routed. Let me know what you guys think.

My viper looks exactly like that, I used a small spring and put it on top of the chaincase cause that is where my pullcord keeps fraying and breaking. no breaks last season
 
Should be a little mount that holds the coolant line that boxes the pull cord in but thats where it should be. Theres not much friction at all really.
 
If your pull cord looks frayed or you just want piece of mind replace it with a piece of 1/4" amsteel, samson 12, or dynema rope. those are trade names for high strength spectra sailing rope. If you get it from a marine wholesaler or eBay you can usually find the stuff for just under $1.00/foot. It's the same stuff you see advertised as cobra rope but doesn't cost $35 for 6' of it. The breaking strength is around 4000lbs and it has a very high breaking strength with no stretch. If your sled ever dies you can cut the rope off and use it to tow the thing home with!
