I have a 89 exciter 570 and when i was riding it, it shut off by itself and dies. Sometimes it will start back up right away and have no problems but other times it will back fire and not have all the power that it should. Any ideas on what the problem is?
 
Coil
Remove the two wires from the coil using a small electrical wrench. These will be the positive and negative terminals.
Place the red lead from the ohmmeter on the positive (+) terminal and probe the coil mounting bracket with the black lead. The display should be infinite (no reading or continuity). If there is any continuity the coil is shorted and needs replacing.
Move the black lead to the coil negative terminal (-) and watch the display. The reading should be less than 1 ohm.
Move the black lead to the coil tower and probe the contact inside the tower. The reading should be 10 to 60 ohms, no more. If the coil failed any of these tests, replace it.
Stator
find the main plug thats located a few inches off the mag, near the recoil. unplug it. on the mag side of the harness, connect one meter probe to the white/green wire terminal and the other to the white/red. spec is 203 ohms. this is for the pulsor coil. next, one probe to the brown terminal, other to the black/red. should be around 421 ohms resistance. last is the brown/red to black. around 97.2 should be your reading. all numbers are +/- 10%, and taken at 68 degrees.
I would also make sure carbs are clean and probably change spark plug caps first.
 
There are no terminals on these coils. There is an orange lead that is positive and the metal body that is the ground. Try cleaning the the coil under the ground wire. Next time it acts up, wiggle the orange lead and see if anything changes.
The stator plug is either under the air box/jack shaft or on the side of the air box. I have seen it both ways. I guess it depends who was in it before.
Checking the plug caps like YM said is a good idea. Cut a 1/4 off both leads then re-install caps just for piece of mind. Check for a grey-ish dirt on the outside plug as well. If this dirt is present, it means there is some carbon tracking going on.
The symptoms you decribe also could be a vapor lock or slightly over heated condition. This shows up from time to time on these sled in warmer 30ish temps. Especially with an aftermarket pipe or if you have the 87 hood with no vents.

I've cleaned the carbs they were a little dirty but not bad. I tested the coil and it was good and I changed the plug caps. It still backfires and doesn't have all the power that it should. I'm going to test the stator tonight.
 
Between cleaning the carbs and getting new plugs it ran better for a while but it started to back fire again and then won't start so I clean the carbs again. Drained the tank and put a filter on it. So far it's running good. Thanks for the help!
