97 600 xtc piston and ring update

i purchased this sled used last year with 2700 miles in nice shape.
how do i know if the update for the pistons and rings were done and at what mileage should i be concerned if the update wasn't done?
If i contact the dealership with the serial number will that get me anywhere?
 
I would be concerned now. Do it before engine damage occurs. My 97 went at 3500 miles and took out the cylinder when it did. Get new pistons from Yamaha. The new pistons Yamaha will be the update ones. You can also use an aftermarket piston. I use Wiseco pistons with no issues.....just make sure you warm up your sled before riding. Many people have issues with Wiseco pistons seizing because they start it and go. I have thousands of miles with out any issues. Look in the tech section for reed stopper notch and thinner head gasket mods. You will notice a difference in performance with the mods. You will have to run 91 octane with the thinner head gasket....I would do it any way to get away from ethanol. Ethanol not good to the 2-stroke engine.
 
My guess is it never had the update? But if it were mine id run it. We have 3 of these sleds in our group and all of them well over 6000 mi and only one of them has ever had a problem and it was a lean mag side burn down. New piston, rings around and its still going strong!!! This sled also had a known oil pump problem and we have not had one of those go bad either. So up to you in the end just sharing my experiences.
 
I did have to put an oil pump on only because it was leaking oil bad a enough to leave a puddle on the floor.
I think if i make it to summer without any problems i will do the pistons and rings just to get away from the cost of a cylinder.
Its my 16 year old sons sled and he likes it especially the electric start reverse and laughs at dad when i have to pull my 99 sx by hand back wards.
Yes i only use premium fuel not worth the ethanol headaches.

So when i do open the motor. pistons, rings ,wrist pin and bearing and base and head gaskets all new?
The cylinders shouldn't need any attention i wouldn't think yet anything i'm missing?
 
Yes to all except head gasket you can reuse it as long as you don't rip it. Just spray with copper gasket before installing. If you do get a head gasket for more performance and compression get a 95 head gasket.
 
So the 95 gasket is a little thinner i would assume.Copper gasket spray any speed shop carries it?

If you buy the spray you can always do the head gasket mod and save money rather than buying a 95 head gasket.
Thin head gasket along with reed spacers or reed stopper notch and a good clutch setup really wake these sleds up
