throttle cable removal 2003 vmax

I plan on doing a carb cleaning and was looking at removing the throttle and oil cables at the thumb lever. I tried removing them but I was having no luck. I thought I would ask if there is a trick to releasing the cables from the thumb lever before I break something? Any suggestions?
 
Should be a retaining clip that holds them in place. Way easier to remove from carb rack. Because the oil cable does not need to be touched. Just throttle and CHOKE and they need a readjust anyway!

Way easier to remove from carb rack.
That little retaining clip is kind of a pain and you can loose it fast. I know have lost a few of them just looking at em.
 
Ok I was thinking to do it at the handlebar end because of the instructions in the tech pages carb cleaning but I will go this route instead. Thanks for your help.
 
you guys were right , very simple that way just need to split the air box before getting it out. Carbs are cleaned and I adjusted the fuel screw a bit leaner at 1.5 turns out instead of the factory recommended 2 turns. I'm trying to dry out the plugs a bit when it is idling. Won't be able to tell for sure if it is better until we get some snow to test.
