Fresh off a top end rebuild, about 50 miles in and out of nowhere a bog and dead. I was not pushing it hard, no warning light. Open hood not a great amount of antifreeze but enough. Nothing in the reservoir, went to pull it over went about 2 inches to a dead stop. Locked up, I'm pissed. Loaded on trailer have not opened up, what could have been the cause? What should I look for?:o|:o|:o|:o|
 
did you let the sled get good and warm and the thermostat open up so the air would escape after you rebuilt it?

sounds like you had a air pocket if theres a bunch of antifreeze missing, or a hole in a heat exchanger, hose, etc. if it was injesting it via the head gasket one of the spark plugs should be shiny and wet, with a flashlite you can lookdown in spark plug holes and see top of piston if you can rotate the engine enough to get piston about half down in cylinder, any of the pistons shiny like new looking?

Go out and grab the clutch and rotate it back and forth a few times, see if it will turn over now by turning the clutch not pulling on recoil rope....
 
Is it possible to you put the piston's in backwards? I've seen it happen my brother didn't it to his xlt a few years ago he got about 20 miles and it locked up.

I was able to rotate the clutch and turn it over, feels like a possible connecting rod when I turn it over or maybe a crank bearing. Hind site 20/20 I should have replaced when I had it apart. I left it with a friend up here, he is going to break it down and let me know. The antifreeze was from the overflow tube.

I bleed the coolant with the rear elevated a little higher than the reservoir and made sure it was a constant flow from the rear screw. All the heat exchangers got warm. I put it through several heat cycles before I took it to the trails.
 
unfortunately it is likely a rod as they pound the rod bearings on the center and mag cylinders a lot of times, youll know as soon as you pull the cylinders and look for up and down movement on the rod, there should be zero. It will have a slight bit of side to side which is normal but zero up and down.
 
It was a rod went through the case on the pto side. Looks like I need to find a used motor. He said the oil line connector was laying on the bottom and could possibly lost mag side also. Is it worth the trouble or should I part it out? What does a used motor run?

If its a sled you really like fix. If you don't really like it then part it out and put the money towards another sled. If it was me I would probably fix it.
