1985 Phazer no start

I cleaned the carb last season and changed out the choke cables/plungers as well as all fuel lines, it was slightly hard to start but nothing 10-15 pulls wouldnt fix, but still had a low end bog. Sled was then fogged and put away for summer, this winter added fresh gas and pulled until I coudlnt anymore without so much as a sputter.

Fuel lines arent frozen and Im getting air and good spark, I finally got the engine to fire and run for 5 seconds using starter fluid (I dont like using, but I wanted to make sure the thing would at least fire)
So my problem is fuel, I find it hard to believe the carbs would be clogged already especially since I only run 91 octane. My next thought is the fuel pump, the problem is I cant get a new one from Yamaha and I dont want to put in a used one, since I have to pull half the sled apart to change it. Is there a good replacement people use?
 
Clean the carbs again check compression and make sure the filter in the tank is still there and that there no cracks in any of the lines including the line in the tank. I would check these simple thing before replacing pump.
Was it hard to start before cleaning carbs?
 
It was slightly harder than after they were cleaned, but the sled had been sitting in a farmers wood pile for a couple years.
Compression was 125 clutch side 127 PTO side, which seems fine for this sled, fuel lines looked fine, but I will check for cracks in the pulse line and check for the fuel filter. Never thought of the lines in the tank, but the line coming out of the fuel tank seems to be full of fuel.

Also, what kind of skis are on the sled in your avatar, I have a 97' 600 XT and have been looking to upgrade the stock steels.
 
Compression is good. If all line are good then see if any fuel us getting to the carbs. If you are getting fuel to the carbs then clean them again and while you have the carbs off pull the reed out and check for them for trash and to see if they are cracked or broke. My 87 phazer cracked a reed and became hard to start I replaced them with boysen reeds and was good to go.
The skis in the avatar are on my 97 600 sx and the are SLP chrome moly ultra lites. I got them off my dads Polaris ultra sks before he sold it. They handle a lot better than the stock skis and were a direct bolt on. I've been thinking about getting a set of white Polaris gripper skis.
 
So I pulled the carbs out, also found a nest inside the engine shroud. It looks like it was an issue with the after market choke cables/plungers I had installed. I unscrewed the choke cables from the carb and the area where the plunger and spring sit is full of crap (looks like rust), the springs are basically disintegrated its so bad I cant even pull the plungers out (they are soaking in WD) they've only been on the machine for 2 years with minimal mileage... Has anyone ever seen this happen? The rest of the carbs look like when I installed them, no dirt, no obstructions, bowls were full of fuel as well as fuel lines.
 
Yep. I have seen everything you have described time and time again on sleds that people let sit outside year after year then expect them to run like a top. Clean the carbs, drain the gas and start over. REALLY clean the carbs.
 
Ya unfortunately the Vmax gets the lean to, and the half finished phazer is banished to the backyard until I can get a garage up. Ill try to find a sotck choke set up, I have a spare set of carbs Im going to clean up and try.
