*Help* 1977 Yamaha GP440 Problems

Hello all,

New to the forum, and new to the sled world. I recently picked up a 1977 Yamaha GP440 second hand. It ran alright for the first little bit, but it would often have a *bogging* problem on start up.

It died on me this weekend, and I am thinking it is a carb issue. (I will let you know, that I dont know much about all this stuff haha) I had to keep 'playing' with the choke in order to get it to go...

I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the model? I cant seem to find very much info on them online. What kind of carb is it? and where could I get a carb rebuild kit for it?

I am In canada, and I believe royaldistributing.com has many parts for all kinds of sleds, I just cant seem to find much for the GP440...

U can try Recreation Supply also. Is it a diaphragm carb or butterfly? If a butterfly- dis assemble and soak in a good cleaner.

Similar issues to yours ..... Visibly the carb from a 74 GP433 looks the same as the 77 PR440's that I have( and 75 TL and 76PR)
I have a bucket of these carbs but they randomly will have the same issues... if you could find a broken part then I could find a better one...
I'm in Ontario N of Toronto. I have had similar issues , torn them apart and find nothing wrong and reassembled and work again.. You have small
accelerator pump which was supposed to help with bog of the older ones without it .. I don't ride my 74 as the track has the strange double slider
but only single drive..(bad idea)... but it will start , idle and nothing more unless you hold throttle open and apply correct amt of choke ...
I will be a blocked or cracked passage on the high speed circuit I expect.
The 74 and newer GP were reed valve and still just 433's from what ive seen for specs.

Hey, thanks for the help! I will PM you maybe this weekend Ron. I'm going to try and take the carb out. (Like I said, I'm new to this stuff) I'll let you know how I make out. If something is broke, it's good to know I may be able to get replacement parts! Thanks a

You need to remove the "dog house" over the tank and carb ,,, if you remove the seat , evict the mouse nest on top of rectifier which is between
seat and tank ... find a cheap wrench to grind the open end thinner and a slight bend to remove the carb ... don't touch the little bolt spacers
until you stuff the intake with a rag... will need to remove the little nut on injection rod and remember where it was set as the little clip
is miserable to get on again ,,, if I recall correctly...
that's all I can think of with out looking at one..
