How do you adjust the pre-load on steel body shocks?

How do you adjust the pre-load on steel body shocks if you don't have that special spanner wrench? Is that even possible? Sled is a 97 VT500.
 
Just use a large Channelock pliers. Do not squeeze too hard but hard enough to not slip. It really is quite easy (normally).

There should be steps on the collar, just turn it to the desired step.

Maybe a dumb question, but do you squeeze that right under the "pins" you would use the spanner on, if you had it?
 
You would want to grab it by the toothed wheel section of the adjusters. Give them some kind of spray line too it gets real dry between the shock body and the adjuster. If you can jack up the sled or put it on its side. Those preload collars are a real bugger even when there's no machine weight on the spring.
 
Thanks, I bought pliers just like that. Will have to see what I can do, in two weeks, when I get home.
