Can you weld the crank case?

97 VT 500. Previous owner broke off the tabs that hold the e-start motor. I guess there is no way to weld them back on, it won't hold, right?
 
Actually there is a piece missing on one. I have only "half the bolthole" on one. Can one correct that? Some material needs to be added.
 
depends on how good the welder is. A aluminum shop should be able to do it. only concern is they may have to pre heat the block to get good weld penetration and that would require the removal of all rubber and gaskets and seals most likely.
 
It should be no problem to weld it. The piece you are missing could be built up with weld and then drill and tap the hole. I would tig weld it.
 
It could be repaired. I would strip down the motor and bring it to them with both case halves bolted together so that it can self support as it heats and cools. They would most likely preheat so you would want to break it down so as not to cook all bearings and seals.
 
I guess JB weld won't hold, if I use a dab of that at the broken lower mount? "Welding" in a bolt without head, that I can thread on a nut later?
 
I would not use jb weld. It will not hold and then the welder will have to clean the jb weld off. It will be an easy job for someone to weld it.
 
Thanks. That will have to be sorted out after the season. For now, I will just ride the sled with battery, but no e-start. Took the motor out and fuse, so nothing will fry if I turn the key too far.
 
Done this many times. Half hour job for a good aluminum welder. Just have to be careful not to hit it with too much heat or it will distort the case.
