I can't speak for the viper, but I was able to pull the starter on my mtn Max with the clutch off and didn't touch the exhaust. It was tight, gear wrenches were mandatory but it wasn't impossible.
So far my clutch puller hasn't worked. Noted that hydraulic pressure with water and thread tape work, but would require motor tilted up. As I remember this same procedure with grease will work?
Load the puller up real good, not with an impact but a ratchet. Leave it to sit overnight loaded up. If it's still on there in the morning give the puller a few raps with a small sledge hammer. An impact will stall before you will load it up nearly as much as you can by hand.
