I have a "98" XTC 500 Deluxe. The electric start and backup alarm do not work but other than that everything else is fine. After troubleshooting it today I got it down to not having a (B) side on the schematic going the starter relay. If I run my own wire to another (B) point on the drawing and connect it to the (B) point on the starter relay then the electric start and backup alarm both work. The factory (B) side wire disappears into the wire loom.
My question is does anyone know where it goes from there to trace it and repair it properly. The (B) stands for Black on the drawing and appears to be ground however there is a different symbol for ground use elsewhere in the schematic. I really don't want to run an extra to fix this.

That appears to be the ground side of the relay. Just run a similar sized wire and ground it to the battery or the engine.

This is most likely what I will need to do. I was just hoping to locate the problem in case I have any other more important wires at the same place ready to break.

You should be able to follow the harness. They don't go to far.

Finally found it. It was the big battery ground cable itself. The ring lug wire where it connected to the chassis had broken inside the insulation so you couldn't see it. It is a very stiff cable so it stayed in place. Both sides of the wire would still touch after the break so when I metered it it would test fine but not pass any current to speak of. That was fun.
