Hey Everyone. I'm completly new. I just bought a 1998 SRX 700. Thing ran great first day I got it. Second day I went up and down a field finnaly getting more confortable with it. After about 15 mins it seemed to lose power. Came back parked it for about 10 mins. Went to start it back up and it wouldnt, felt like it was seized. Brought her home and pulled the head closes to the clutch. Found metal stuck to the top of the piston and marks all over the top. Looked like something was in there. So i started to pull the motor, currently waiting for the clutch removal tool which ill have tomrrow.

My main question is what should I be looking for? Im so new to this. Also my fuel gauge does not work, and Speedo. Which I found the Speedo Key broken inside the trans? ugh... It shows it has 5,000 kms but with the speedo not working it makes me think it has more.

Any advice would be awsome, tips tricks etc. I wanna get out sleding. Thank you in advanced to everyone.
 
Welcome to the site. Sorry to here you seized the motor. Its absolutely essential to clean the carbs on these sleds each year preseason. This exact scenario plays out alot. The ethanol is usually the problem plugging up the pilots causing a lean condition. I wouldn't pull the engine as that is not necessary. Pull all three cylinders and post pics of the pistons hear will help diagnose. With pictures many group members will chime in with plenty of suggestions for repair. Its sounds like you are up to the task of repair yourself thank god cause sending it out to the stealership is very expensive. Good luck.

That actually doesn't look that bad.

For starters, I would look around and try to find out what went thru that cylinder. It may have been blown into the exhaust pipe but I would carefully look around. How do your rings look? And how does the underside of the head look? I would take a look in the crankcase also. I'm hoping nothing got down there but it's worth 10 min to look in there to make sure.

You also need to take a good look at the cylinder for any gouges that may have happened. If you run your fingernail over a gouge and you feel it, you're most likely going to have to deal with the cylinder.

Imo, I would replace the piston, rings, upper connecting rod bearing and cir-clips. I would deal with the cylinder as needed. But I'm one of those ..."if in doubt...change it out" people. Some more experienced members will start replying and they may say it's usable. I just know I wouldn't use it again.

Mac is correct. Carbs are usually always at fault due to bad gasoline and ethanol. These carburetors need to be cleaned once a year before the season or you're setting yourself up for problems.

Any pictures will help a lot in diagnosing your problem.
 
Well i tore the motor apart today... i cant believe what i have found. The crackshaft is broken?? How?? What do i do. Also looks like it broke the lower case too :( is this something yamaha will cover? I heard they had bad cranks.20161214_215409.jpg

I hate to say this but it really hurts to look at that. Cranks are the holy grail of this engine.

I'm not sure how much time and effort you want to devote to this project but if you want to fix this you don't have a lot of great options.

Option 1: Rebuild the engine.

A rebuild is doable but you'll need to find a lower case and a good crank. If you look at the classifieds, there are people selling parts on this site. You may be able to find what you need. I think a viper crank and lower case will work in the SRX but not 100% sure.

Option 2: Find another engine

Finding another SRX engine could be hard. Sometimes you can find Viper engines, but I wouldn't say an SRX engine is as available.


I'm hoping that someone with more SRX knowledge will weigh in on availability of parts to fix your engine. As far as Yamaha taking care of this, I would highly doubt it. If you're thinking about rebuilding the engine, you could search the topic on this site. It may help you understand what is needed to pull off a successful rebuild.
 
WOW. I've seen seized crank bearings, seals disintegrated, chatter marks, pto ends break off etc. but that is pretty extreme. Sorry about your luck. Many sellers on Kijiji but you don't know what your getting / paying for.
 
How bad is the lower case broken? I had a minor crack under the connecting rod and I had it welded by GC Alloy weld for 20 bucks.

so an update. Ended up finding a guy out in ottawa who did a rebuild on a bottom end with a crank. shpping it down now. got the top jugs sent to a machine shop. had everything cleaned and checked. got new gaskets and a bunch of stuff from yamaha. now to reassemble on weds.
