Inaccurate fuel level below 1/2 tank

I did a search for fuel and fuel gauge, but didn't have much luck with cross referencing my issue. When riding this past Sunday, my fuel level got down to 1/2 tank. My group and I decided to start hauling outta the mountains. After about 4 miles, my level dropped 1 bar per mile until the low fuel light came on. Thought I had a leak at first, but no sign of gas or gas smell at all when checking her over. Harness connections look good; harness looks okay.. Fired it back up and then fuel was showing good level (1/2 tank to 1 bar below 1/2 tank). We took off, then it acted the same way for the rest of the 15 mile ride out and I rode the rest of the way with the low fuel light on. A wiring harness issue doesn't add up for me as I'd suspect problems through the range or just all the time. I'm almost thinking the float is bad maybe and acts differently at and below 1/2 tank..?? I also didn't think a bad sending unit made sense either.. What do you guys think?

I will also mention the fuel level would not change even when I'd stop and let the fuel stop jostling in the tank. The low-level light would still be on.
 
Using a coat hanger, can you (carefully) raise and lower the float assembly while checking the resistance of the sending unit to see if it functions smoothly?
 
Pickup and filter likely tangled. Get good light down in there and you can likely see it. Otherwise you will likely have to replace the sender unit on the front of the tank. You can use the test northern srx posted above.
 
I would like to point out the shape of your gas tank. It does seem like something's wrong still, but.. the top of the tank isn't very wide while as you get near the bottom it widens up a lot. This could be part of it but it does sound like something's up with your sensor.

The tanks are very long too they extend quite a ways under the seat. Most of the volume is below 1/2. If you have to mess with the pickup hose/filter make sure you use enough so that the hose naturally lays straight back and the filter is sitting just in front of the rear part of the tank.

Yes, I used to be worried about it because above half tank, it seemed like it was guzzling gas but once it got below half, it doesn't move much. The lower half of the tank is much more wide and has more volume.
