97 500 xtc rpm's seem high

does anyone know what rpms I should be at while cruising between 30-40 mph is there a chart ? or how do I know if I'm
too high or too low
 
I have limited experience with the twins, but
I would think around 5500 rpms give or take a few hundred rpms.

I've ran some fairly worn belts and never notices a difference cruising. You may need to remove, clean and inspect your clutches. If you lift the rear of the sled and run it, does the track spin freely? At the same time you can visually confirm if your clutchs are functioning properly.

My 2001 Venture 500 runs around 5,000 5,500 going those speeds and I just put a new belt on mine too this season My question to you is what is your Max RPM you have seen on that sled?
 
That I don't know because where I've been riding it lately it wouldn't be wise to be going full tilt and looking down ... Should I only see a certain amount

It is all relative to your clutching components and wear, drive line wear and clutch cleanliness. I believe your Max rpm should be ABSOLUTELY no higher than 8000. Prime rpm is 7800. Or that's what's coming to mind. Someone w/ a 97 and up twin will chime in and clarify. My 96 is a different designed twin.

It shouldn't be 7800 at 30-40 mph, that's for sure. Depending on your set up I think 5500 at 40 mph is pretty reasonable.
 
I was planning on fogging mine tonight, Ill take it for a spin and let you know (clutches/skid/bearings were all done less than 2000kms ago) Belt is brand new, so it should be close to bang on. (and is completely stock)
 
If you want the rpms down, maybe you should put on heavier rivets on the inner hole of the weight, try that to start with.
 
I was seeing around 6000rpm at 40mph roughly, speedo doesn't work (bearings are good, old key is stuck in the shaft) had to use my phone gps. This was on hard pack snow, mines a 600 twin, but also a 97 so should be close. Hope this helps.
