New trailing arm, new bushing... can't get them together!!!

I heated the hole area of the arm a little (just put it over the heater register at home) and put the bushing in the freezer for about 4 hours. Still cannot get the bushing into the hole in the new arm... I'm about fed up... guess I need an arbor press or something? I tried my big shop vise, but bent the friggen twist arm... oh well, it was cheap (love the surplus store)... guess I ride the weekend on the bent arm... oh well... been riding on it for weeks now.

Any other ideas??

done did mine with the vise idea worked for me.... i think i ended up grinding a little relief to one side of the bushing and then used a socket just undersize of the same pressed right in...maybe try a little wd-40 to help get it going...CP
 
We have a big arbor press and all the tools in our product development dept. at work.... I'll run in there tomorrow at lunch and see if I can't get it in.

I ground a little taper on the leading edge to help in getting it started. I also coated the insert with silicone grease. I left the insert in the freezer overnight and used a 240 volt construction heater to heat the trailing arm for an hour. Then, I used an automotive ball joint press and an impact gun and it went togeather easy. Good luck.
 
LOL!!! All that cold, heat, taper, and you still say it went together "easy." ;)!

I just need the right tools.... hopefully at work tomorrow....
 
I have done quite a number of them, and haven't had a problem getting them in. At least not that I can remember. You are talking about the damper that goes in the rear mount point of the trailing arm right? Is the opening in the trailing arm out of round or something?

I do believe that I did freeze the damper (bushing) good though.
 
Yeah, the rear end bushing where it attaches to the frame under your left foot... I have the arm in the oven in our PD department... and a can of Instant Freeze here at my desk... heading up there at break time (10 minutes or so) to use the arbor press... gotta git er done!!!

Funny you never asked me about the bushing. I could have done it for ya weeks ago. No reason to get fed up, been there done that !!! Also I have your face shield. Any other projects that you are fighting with ???
 
Well, the right tools for the job sure make it easy. Heated the arm, quick froze the bushing, used the arbor press and a 7/8" socket (eeg gads, I used a standard sockeet on a yamaha!!!) and it went right in.... slick as butter.

Thanks Pat, but I was determined to NOT let this one get the better of me!!! I'm going to stop by your house tonight to get the shield if that's o.k. with you. Spent last night hooking up the power for the shield... that part was easy... got my power from the tail light wires under the seat... plug comes out kinda between your legs at the tank. BUT, friggen snaps that hold the sides of the seat down... ripped two of em out and broke a 3rd one... rusty sons of beaches... was at Meijers for an hour last night at 10:00 looking for one of those snap kits..... finally found it in the crafts section... put a couple snaps in and it's all back together. I think I'm done farting around with this thing now.

All we need is snow now!!!
 
Glad you got it in. Usually with the heat and the freeze you don't even need an arbor press. Of course if one is available, by all means use it.
