Head Gasket Thickness

there are 2 OEM head gaskets early version is .020'' fiber with metal fire ring and later version of .040'' which is 3 piece metal ...winderosa are .040''
 
Why did they change to the thicker gasket?

The numbers you listed earlier was that the compressed thickness?
