Bravo 250 Help Again!

I picked up my 2nd sled (Bravo 250 same as first- having good luck and a ton of fun-thanks to you guys !). Bought the sled in the dark,on Christmas Eve,for a few hundred bucks. Today was the first chance to look if over good. What I found was the chain housing to have a large hole 1 1/2" by 4''on the top. It looks like someone took a hammer to it. The chain is ok and I cannot find anything that would cause it ! After starting it (more latter) the belt (track) and drive train seems to be fine.
My question is: Can I just place a metal cover over the housing? Is this good enough.Or must I replace it? Is there any used dealers out there that would have this part --Fould one on Ronnies' for $151.00.(this thing is old and pretty much shot and I hate to put money into it).Also what kind of oil should be in there( for chain)?

One more question,when the gas is let off the engine backfires. What can cause this?

take the chain case to a welder, he can weld it up easy and grind it to fit, have to take the entire thing off to do it, but very easy. Use 80-90 in the chaincase, and backfiring when backing off is lean on the main jets, clean the carb, might just be plugged jets.

I did clean the carb (as much as I could without taking it off sled).There is a little black box under the instrument panel,held with a rubber strap that has a hose from the fuel cell going to it and comming out of the black box a hose just hanging (with no connection-any Ideas)--I will disassemble carb and try to get gear housing welded.

Also is there any used dealers (or aftermarket parts) for this sled?
I need things like hand grips. There are two unused wires behind instrument panel (on both sleds I have) does anyone know what they are for?? (hand/thumb warmers ???)

BTW:

Do I need a gear puller(to remove bearings/gears)
Does the chain need to be adjusted ?

you dont need any special tools to pull the chain. To adjust it, just tighten it finger tight with the bolt on the lower right hand side, that protrudes from the case. Cleaning the carb means taking it off the sled, pulling the bowl off the bottom, and removing the jets, cleaning the crap out of it, not the outside. All the important stuff is in the carb. Take your time, pay close attention to what comes out of where.
