Hey guys, PoPPin600 here...
Was having a friendly debate with a friend about potential causes for "bogging out" when pinned from a dead stop. My sled (99 sx600) runs great and rides awesome. One thing that does bother me is when my buddies and I are racing from a dead stop,, when I just PIN the throttle, the sled bogs like hell... I have to "roll into" the throttle so it doesn't bog down...

To eliminate possible causes I cleaned all 3 carbs spotless, adjusted air/fuel screws to 1 3/4 turns out and replaced all three plugs. Like I said, the machine runs great and idles nice and overall rips... itjust boys when I go from 0 throttle to FULL instantly..

Fuel delivery problem?
Jetting problem?
What do you think?

I'd love to hear your guys thoughts and I'd like to get this sorted out so I can go whoop some skidoo *** on the lake.
 
The 600 triple fuel screws are suppose to be 2 full turns out, I would start there.
 
Also, take a look at where your belt is riding in the secondary. Should be at least flush, or just above. That could also create a bog.
But, I would guess its carbs as well.
 
Try blipping the choke on and then off right before pinning it and see if it doesn't bog when doing that. If that fixes the bog then it is a lean condition causing it.

I have to ask, what was your method in cleaning all three carbs spotless? You may know how to properly clean carbs and I'm barking up the wrong tree, but many, many times I've had someone tell me that they cleaned their carbs but have a bog from idle. When asked about how they cleaned the pilot jets they say that they sprayed carb cleaner through them...but did not stick a small wire through them or hold them up to a light and make sure they can see a nice, albeit tiny, round hole through them.
I've NEVER EVEN ONCE had success in cleaning out plugged pilots by just spraying cleaner through them. I've always had to run a wire through them to successfully get all the crud out. I run a wire through them several times, then spray with cleaner, then blow out with air, and then verify by holding up to a light to ensure they are clear and it is a nice round hole. If not, then repeat until it is. When I next talk to the above folks again, 98% of the time they tell me that they pulled the carbs again and found that the pilots did in fact still have blockage and after putting it back together their bog was gone.
Having the fuel screw at the spec of 2 turns is also needed to not be lean from idle.

Removed all pilot jets individually, cleaned with wire, carb clean all passages,, all the goodies, air jets etc. i like to clean the carbs beginning of every season...

Anyways,,,, as mentioned, I did flip the choke lever into the half open position after it was warmed up and then pinned it and there was minimal if no bog then... what would that indicate? Not enough fuel??

Reason I set my air/fuel screws at 1-3/4 is because whenever I check my plugs, they seem to be wet when set at the factory 2 turns out so I figure it was rich? I've also read that these sleds are set rich from Yamaha.
 
Yes, if half choke helped, you are currently getting a lean bog.
Go back to 2 turns out and try again.

My belt appears to be riding right up top where it usually is. Although my primary has started to squeak a bit.

Ok I will pull it all apart again and dial them out again... I just cleaned and set the carbs two days ago and when it was at 2 turns out, Or should I go 2-1/4? Reason I ask is because it also bogged at 2 turns out. Only when I pin it from a dead stop. Drag race style.
 
Should not bog at 2 turns out, if it continues, something else is going on.
What elevation are you at ?

Yes sir. I removed all of those individually as well and blew out all passages.
I cannot exactly remember if in fact they were at 2 turns out before... but when I had the carbs off and was going through them I seated all the screws lightly and backed them each out 1-3/4 turns... I should've taken note of what they were initially set at. I'm pretty sure they were set at 2 turns out as per spec on the factory settings page.. but I just cannot remember.
 
Air box is fully intact as far as I can tell..... I did 2" holesaw my factory muffler though...
Also running BR9ES at the moment if that makes a difference.
 
Many say that makes a difference in jetting.
Also not advisable to run without it. Too much powder gets in there, then BOOM.
 
Well, was running really good at 2 turns out. Still runs great, but I just wasted my right side control arm, so now I have another problem to worry about... #thesedamnthingsaremoneypits
 
When was the primary spring replaced last? The clutch could be shifting out to fast, think of a manual transmission and skipping from 1st to 3rd.
