Do I have a clutch issue???

My 97 Vmax 600 seemed sluggish most of the weekend while in the UP. Grab a handfull of throttle and wait...wait....wait... GO!..... once it hit about 7000 rpm it would take right off and head on up to 9000 rmp pretty easy. I drove all weekend with the tack..... run it up to 8000 and stop.... with half the throttle left. It seemed to have no get up and go out of a corner either. Put a brand new belt on it and the issue didn't go away... picked up about 5mph on the top (went from ~75 to ~80 at 8000 rpm).... but still had nothing out of a corner and still had to wait for the power to come. It didn't do this the last time I rode it a week or two before. I did notice that the belt does sit in the secondary when at idle or shut off... sub flush... shouldn't it be riding just a bit higher than the clutch plates when idling or shut off?

Also, the new belt squeeled the whole time it was on. I probably have 60 miles or so on it and it still squeels. It also will "walk" the sled forward when idling (especially at cold start up). I know I got the right belt... checked the numbers twice with the book at the shop where I bought it.

Any thoughts?

try putting the shim washers back in the secondary and give it more preload as well and no it usally sit flush or a little under the sheaves.sounds like the belt is to tight.or the offset has moved?
 
My question is how could anything "move" if it's never been taken apart? It didn't have these issues the last time I rode it hard. I know NOTHING about clutches (other than understanding HOW they work, but couldn't take one apart or put it back together).
 
Sounds like you have more problems than just a belt. I would check your clutch springs, and other components. Also check for black marks on the sheaves that would indicate belt slippage. The secondary spring may be weak or broken.
 
the spacers that i mention are removed if the belt has worn in and takes up the slack between the sheaves the offset moveing is not as likely but can happen if abearing is gone or the chain sprocket bolt has come loose.start by getting a budy in the know or a maual and check the secondary as ding has said .

as these guys have said, it sounds like you have two issues, the belt sqeeking and the sled moving forward, means yours secondary needs to be adjusted for the new belt, i think there is somthing about that in the tech pages.

the second being no power could be a broken spring the primary, check that to see if the spring looks good, mine has acted the way you descripe when my spring was broken.
 
check the rollers in the primary. my friend had almost the exact same problem and he had 2 shot rollers in the primary
 
Hope to look at it this weekend sometime. We actually have enough snot to test it now... as long as the Parks And Recreation people don't mind a little track mark in the grass of the park across the street!! LOL!!!
