I posted this in the tech section too... but there is a lot more traffic here so I'm posting it here too:

My 97 Vmax 600 seemed sluggish most of the weekend while in the UP. Grab a handfull of throttle and wait...wait....wait... GO!..... once it hit about 6500-7000 rpm it would take right off and head on up to 9000 rmp pretty easy. I drove all weekend with the tack..... run it up to 8000 and stop.... with half the throttle left. It seemed to have no get up and go out of a corner either. Put a brand new belt on it and the issue didn't go away... picked up about 5mph on the top (went from ~75 to ~80 at 8000 rpm).... but still had nothing out of a corner and still had to wait for the power to come. It didn't do this the last time I rode it a week or two before. I did notice that the belt does sit IN the secondary when at idle or shut off... sub flush... shouldn't it be riding just a bit higher than the clutch plates when idling or shut off?

Also, the new belt squeeled the whole time it was on. I probably have 60 miles or so on it and it still squeels. It also will "walk" the sled forward when idling (especially at cold start up). I know I got the right belt... checked the numbers twice with the book at the shop where I bought it.

Any thoughts?

Mike

didn't look that close. I'll have the sled back home tonight... if I get a chance I'll look into it further.

Also, the speedo quit working. Do I have a drive shaft bearing issue waiting to end my season??

I would check everything in regard to the clutches. Weights (move freely maybe a back shift issue), Springs, Helix, Motor mounts and center to center. Chances are the problem is in there somewhere. Your secondary should sit right at the top (flush) when idleing or stopped. Maybe the spring went bad in your secondary. Keep us posted on what you find out. Helps everyone learn how to diagnose certain probs.

9000 RPM? Walking sled at Idle? ....First thing is 8000 RPM is max on that motor so it sounds like some clutch issue's, check all like AllVipedUp said. The walking issue is simple, you have belt residue built up on the sheaves which is causing it to squeal and walk at idle. With the speedo, there is a linkage from the drive shaft to the cable that has either busted or it's all bound up. Simple repair for that.

I know 8000 is max, and I didn't let it go over that except after I put the new belt on to see if it would do it. Actually, I think it would go right past 9000 rpm and blow up!!! Before I put the new belt on I used a scrubbing sponge (rough side) and some brake cleaner to clean the plates as best I could (both the primary and the secondary). Guess I better start with getting the secondary off and have it looked at.

for that new belt it sounds like you need to take out some belt deflection washers on the back of the secondary.

As far as the loss of power on low end then gain as r's go up, I just had that exact thing happen to me, one day it was fine the next it was doing what you described. Apparently the bushings went bad in my rollers causing dammage to them and my weights. You could see the pattern of wear on the weight coinsided with the way the motor was running. It was wore down at the begining, where the motor was bogging because it was shifting out too quickly, but then it was not wore at all further down the weight, so the motor seemed to run fine at the higher r's. then when you let off the gas it back shifts and starts over again wich would explain dogginess out of the corners.

That was just my problem though, it could be as simple as a wore out spring or something, but i would deffenently check out the weights and rollers
