Overhauling my buddy’s ‘98 SRX. I grenaded. Only one cylinder survived. I have sourced replacement parts and ready to assemble.
I have done the regular parts washing, I use paint thinner, scotch brite, brass wire brush lots of elbow grease And still not satisfied. I even put a (bad) cylinder into a pail with my heavy duty carburetor cleaner. Still didn’t clean it the way I hoped.
anyone got a secret weapon to get’r nice and clean! Maybe even bright?
Thanks

Only thing that's going to really brighten aluminum is an acid cleaner which could damage the cylinder plating. That dull gray is oxidized aluminum, you can either mechanically remove it with a bead blaster or some other method or chemically remove it with acid. For degreasing, simple green and hot water. Avoid any caustic cleaners like oven cleaner, it'll eat up the aluminum real bad.

I used, as suggested, totally green cleaner. Certainly happy with the results. Elbow grease required. Tackling the crankcase next. Should have taken a before pic. It was not real nasty, but quite an improvement.
