Somehow think I might have lost both keys for my '96 Phazer II. What are my options? If I don't have a key to begin with do I need to replace the ignition switch with one that comes with/has a key?

A lot of the 80's and 90's keys are the same across multiple years and models. If you have any other vintage Yamahas try those keys or if you know people who have a few try them all. I usually find one that works.

You can always find a ignition with the same plug and change it out with a different key or take it to a lock smith.

I lost my key two seasons ago. I just went on fleabay and found an ignition and key for cheap. Swapped it out.

Don't suppose this has elec start ?
8k1-82510-20-00 is avail at partszilla , probably from dealerships
it also fits 96 VK540II . and 96 Ovation CS340EW
Check ""what's new"" and cherrypicker has 3 Ovations . not sure about year or elec start..
If yours is not elec start , 9k4-82510-20-00 then NLA ? check a dealer.
I didn't search all models to see non elec start used in other years/ models.
Expect the running parts of elec start or manual could be the same and release
the prongs you need and reinstall in correct position in your plug.. Check with
someone that knows something  before buying a switch if you are not elec start.
My 71 Yamaha mini enduro key fit at least two bikes in high school paring lot8)
