I bet the new 750 turbo probably weighs around 560lbs. I think they are on the right track with the twin and the turbo. and 135hp isnt too bad, considering the 05 rx1 put out 145hp and weighs about 560. The new sleds yamaha has IMO look better than anything else that has come out. But this is just the 1st year for 4 strokes for Poo and 135hp isnt too bad. I figure it'll probably tank like the fusion though. I wish yamaha would just turbo their 1000 EFI and make all the other brands watch and weep, they could easily get 180hp out of that engine with a very mild turbo. That would sure have the mach kissing snowflap.
 
yea that would be awesome, stock-turboed yamaha 4 stroke. They probably think it would be too unreliable though.
 
Yeah, I kinda laugh at some of the responses from the Poo faithfull. They said a week ago that the 750 turbo was going to be 150+ hp and weigh 480 pounds. LOL!!! Yeah right!
Anyways, I dont expect that engine to get any better because its not even a new engine and it isnt even a Polaris engine. Its made in Germany by a company called "Weber" and its basically the same engine that was used in Polaris' watercraft. It is also supposed to meet emission regulations up to 2012. So thats pretty good.
As far as weight, it is supposed to weigh 50 pounds more than their 700 2-stroke. The 700 XC weighs 498 pounds, so I expect the 750 turbo to be about 548. If thats the case, I dont think it will be that much of a success. The Apex is 150 hp and weighs 550 pounds. The Polaris 750 turbo is supposedly 135 hp and 548 pounds. Nice try, Poo but not nice enough.
I agree with you all about the looks of the current Poos, I wasnt crazy about the Fusion when I saw the pics on the internet. I wasnt crazy about it when my local Polaris dealer got one in last fall. I REALLY wasnt crazy about it when I rode one last weekend. As the horse on the Ren & Stimpy show used to say, "no sir, I dont like it!"
I do like the looks of the Switchback and RMKs though, it has a very Yamaha-like look to it, does it not? Look at the gauges too, it looks EXACTLY like the gauges on the Apex.
Supposedly Polaris is also coming out with a "600 H.O." that will be 120 hp and be 2006 compliant. They are also supposedly coming out with a 1000cc twin. I know personally that a lot of people werent happy with their Fusions. Wouldnt you think that before you came out with an even bigger big-bore that you would first fix the problems on the one your currently have?
The days of Polaris being the leader in the snowmobile market look to be over. Doo's '06s arent that impressive and what Ive seen of Polaris for '06 doesnt look that impressive. I dont expect Cat to make any real radical changes, maybe a new 4-stroke. Looks like its going to be a great year for Yamaha!

Well - the poo faithful believed 150 hp because that is what they got out of the watercraft engine - a simple educated guess
Like everyone has said about the new Yamaha - Dont bash it until you personally ride it...
As far as components looking the same - They ALL steal ideas from one another -and that is a good thing for us the consumer. (Yamaha copied trailing arms, and then a arms for example - and the other mfgs copied things such as elctronic power valves, rer/perc and the list goes on)

I personally would have liked Y to make a twin cylinder turbo because I beleive the weight could be around low 500's.

you think they are going to save 50 pounds just by getting rid of two cylinders, and making the others double the size?
 
I don't think yamaha could build a 2 cylinder 4 stroke turbo as light as the 3cylinder, The turbo + extra lines + extra exhaust + extra intake pipe = wieght. Yamaha is holding the "Ace of spades" in the 4 stroke market, the other compaines are turbo charging there 4 strokes as still coming up short. I think we will see a Factory supercharger before a factory turbo (more reliable, and instant boost)
 
Did Polaris invent trailing arms? No, they were on trucks waaay back in the '50s. Did Cat invent a-arms? No, they were on cars waay before then.
The thing these companies did come up with was the foresight to see how they could be adapted for use on a snowmobile to advance technology.
Now, about the 4-stroke. I think that this engine could easily achieve 150 hp, but I dont think that the clutches than Polaris currently has can stand up to the stress. They already have a lot of problems with hot clutches and burning up belts on the 900 Fusion. That sled is 149 hp and wont have as much torque as the 750 would if it were 150 hp. There was a time when Polaris clutching was the best, but I dont think that is the case anymore.
I dont think that a 4-stroke twin with a turbo will be any lighter than a 4-banger without a turbo. Its been proven that a twin is no lighter than a triple, and I dont think a twin would be any lighter than a 4-banger. Besides, the weight of the turbo would make it actually heavier than the Apex currently is.
Im not a big fan of twin cylinder engines. If you want durability, more but smaller pistons are the way to go because it results in less vibration. Look at small V8s in luxury cars. They last much longer than the bigger V8s that got used in trucks and musclecars because of vibration.
A triple or a 4-banger is the way to go.
I would very much like to see Yamaha sit back this year and let Polaris and Cat come out with their new 4-strokes. Then, I would like to see Yamaha come out with a turbo Apex as an '07 model and have it be about 180-200 hp. That would totally blow everyone else away and would leave no doubt in ANYONE'S mind about who is the performance leader.
I dont think it will happen though. First and foremost, Yamaha is all about making dependable sleds. I dont think a turbo fits into that plan.

Supercharger. Auto manufacturers have these with 100,000 mile warranties. Lower the compresssion a bit and look out!
 
Polaris 4-stroke

Just got the scoop from the local Polaris Yamaha dealer. The new Polaris FST four stroke turbo weighs 568 lbs and has 135hp it is basically a better T660 not in the same league as Apex or Vector Apex RTX weighs 539 Nytro 533.

The Polaris uses a 750 twin with probably about 75hp and stresses the motor to make 135 with a turbo. This includes some turbo lag plus a loss of reliability.
