Speedo No Worky.....STORY

Ok, so this is my story.....
The speedo hasn't worked on my SRX the last three times out. No big deal right. Well I was out this weekend with some other people that ride SRX's and the one guy told me that the same thing happened on his '99 SRX. The problem supposedly was that the pin which connects from the speedo into the drive shaft broke off. Well as a result of that, I guess the pin that broke off somehow worked it's way into my drive shaft bearing, thereby reulting in a damn 75 mile ride with a knocking/blown bearing to get back home. Not sure as of yet what the damages are, but I'm having a friend look at while I'm away this week while I'm going. Weird part was that the bearing only rattled when I was going about 20 and below. Well so I get about 2 miles from camp and the damn noise is no where to be found. So, we'll see how bad the damages are when everything is apart.
Lesson Learned: Don't let little issues go too long unless you plan on dealing with larger problems.
 
Seen it Many times on all makes of sleds. When the speedo stops working.....the first thing you do is check drive shaft bearings. The speedo Key breaks as a result of the bearing binding and locking up. Many times it will damage the speedo drive housing, or the drive shaft and if drove long enough can take out the chaincase. ===SRXSRULE===
 
i can relate to the speedo story. as soon as it goes check the bearing, its bad. i rode about 80 miles on a bad one cause im a stubborn A**hole :o|
 
yea when the bearing goes bad, the misalignment causes the speedo key to break. The key didn't make the bearing go bad. I just had my bearing out this last weekend to clean it out good and repack it. Need to maintain the bearing, its definately the highest maintenance bearing on the machine, because they always seem to get water in them. I repack mine every 2000 miles or so.
 
I assume that if you repack it every 2000 miles that there is not a grease fitting on it then. That would be a help if there was. Well, haven't heard from the guy working on the seld, but I'm sure it won't be pretty when I do. But on a better note, when I get her back, it'll be all aligned, clutches hooked up, and bearing back in order! Can't wait to see the difference after the clutches are worked with.
 
you could put a grease fitting on the housing if you wanted and then take the seal off of the bearing, but you would have to make some sort of a seal to hold the grease behind the housing, or it would just ooze out between the bolts. Also you wouldn't be able to give it too much, or the pressure would push the rear seal off of the bearing. I choose to just take it out, clean it out real good with gas and compressed air, and repack it. Works good, and only takes about 20 mins.
 
Just went through this this weekend on my buddy's '03 Poo XCSP 700. Speedometer went first, and after a 250 mile weekend, we realized his bearing is shot. I kinda knew it was coming, but we ignored it so we could ride! Hope his drive shaft didn't get damaged...
