Still trying to solve poor fuel milage

01 srx 700 is still sucking back the fuel at a high rate. We finally got on a decent trail ride on the weekend and sled is only getting about 10 mpg. That is at easy trail riding speed. It took the same amount of fuel as a 580 fan cooled! Xc 700 took four bucks less than mine after only 50 miles. I have ran out of ideas on where else to check, everything seems fine and the top end on this sled will outrun most 800's. The clutching seems good as it shifts at 8400 and the belt is not hot or giving much dust. I have a 9830 camo on that seem to rub a bit on the front cooler guards, but track spins freely on the stand. Checked the carbs again and floats and needle/seat is good. It was hard to start after I took the carbs off and drained it so I keep thinking it is carb/fuel related. It took about 20 pulls to fire it up. The motor is stock, new clutch springs and weeights and rollers are fine. Any ideas on :o| where to go with this would be great, maybe fuel pump? How do you check that? I don't even want to go up north for an extended tour because I refuse to carry extra fuel. Please help!
 
i think its very possible that it could be a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump. My cousin's viper was using way too much fuel, a couple gallons more per stop than the other stock vipers in the group, and we could not figure out why it was using so much fuel. I adjusted everything, once, twice, and once more, nothing cured it. I had the gas lines off of the carbs one day and noticed that fuel was running out of one of the lines. If the diaphragms were sealing correctly fuel wouldn't have been dumping out of the line. I got a cleaned out the diaphragms and it has been fine ever since.
 
I will try anything at this point. Are the fuel pumps rebuildable or does it have to be replaced? I don't smell any gas but will look closer at the pump and lines. Thanks.
 
I'd go after the fuel pump too....crank case vacuum moves the diaphram and pumps the fuel..when you lose the diaphram raw fuel ends up in the crank case and can hydro lock a motor or even worse bend the rod..(did that on a phazer).. having done everything else that would be my guess to go after the pump.. you can rebuild or replace....check the line that goes from the pump to the crank case.
 
we took ours apart and put a new diaphragm in, it was letting fuel seep by, putting way too much into the engine. It was even spraying raw fuel through the vent to the airbox
 
Well I found another symptom, but not a cure. Pulled off the fuel pump and checked the diaphram and everything looked alright, although I am not sure how to check for fuel leaking by the pump, there is no obvious rips or tears in the rubber. The fuel is not siphoning out the fuel lines to the carbs when disconnected but there is fuel in the green hose that tees off to the crank I believe. Anyway I ran the sled with the air box out and there is a lot of raw fuel blowing out the throat of all the carbs. Put my hand in front of the intake of the carb and hand was soaked in gas and could feel it blowing out like exhaust! Don't think that is nornal. I don't have a new fuel pump yet but I have a line on a pump off a 98 srx, will that one work, same pump?
 
It may need new reeds but that blow back is normal. I would rebuild that pump because it is hard to see if there is a pinhole or crack in the diaphram.
 
I just replaced the fuel pump with a 98(my dealer could not guarantee delivery for the weekend). I can't tell you if it makes a difference until I put some miles on it. All I know is that it fired right up in the garage and is still producing a mist from the carbs, so I guess this normal for this sled. Heading up to Kirkland Lake area for a few days this weekend so let's hope this solves my problem. There doesn't seem to be any issues with the reeds but if I do replace them which one are recommended?
 
I don't know I rode with three xc700's last week and some stop I would be $1.00 better and other times I would be a dollar worse but I ride with a 1 1/4 and geared down one tooth.
