02-04 Viper ER ??

Just had both my sleds stolen and now am considering a Viper ER, is there anything I should be concerned about or is any year better than another? Was there not some sort of recall on the shocks, as I see lots of revalved stuff for sale.

Sled, it was not a recall on the shock but a simple change to a softer shock for those who wanted it. For trail riders the softer shocks was what they wanted but not all Viper owners replaced them.
 
If it where me, I'd get the 04 viper s. The ohlins front clickers, are worth the extra $$. There was one on ebay last week in Marshaltown Iowa brand new with warranty. It didn't sell. Was only wanting like 5750. Not really to bad for what you get. Maxdlx
 
The er's have the softer shocks. The shocks are on the 04 ER's are even more softer.

I just bought a new 03 Viper ER and I really have no complaints. I paid $5999 and it was even eligible for the Yamaha Credit program $39/mo 24 months (then pay it off). If you can find a new non-current sled at a dealer you probably would be closer to $5500 right now for new on an 03. These dealers have about $450 a year in finance charges if they are floorplanned, and once the 06 sleds hit the floor it's a tough sell.

03 & 04 had the softer shocks - if you ride in marginal snow conditions you will need a rear heat exchanger. other than that it's a great sled.
 
you really can't go wrong with any, but the '03s and '04s had a couple small updates, including the softer shocks, fuel pump plug, hood/bellypan seating, etc
 
Ya nystateboy I did have full insurance, shitty thing was I had to pay 3 deductibles, 2 sleds and trailer. Did okay for the sleds had a guy on the inside who looked after me.

Looks like the vote is for the 04 Viper S, but looks like most of the 02-03 used ones should have the rear heat exchanger added, does the Viper S need it as well?
 
that rear heat exchanger thing is kind of overrated. Most people never had any problem at all with the stock setup unless they were in very marginal snow conditions for awhile. As long as you ride in decent snow you should be fine. If you have the problem, its not like installing the extra one is hard.
 
My light has come on twice this winter - both times when we were traveling slowly thru town (between trails). My dealers dad told me to throw snow on the running boards if you are traveling slowly thru town and that should keep the thing from heating up - i've done it a couple times now and it works well.
 
yes it does work well, there is a lot of area for cooling on those running boards, snow does a lot for the conduction of the heat.
 
The only times I have had my light come on so did a 2004 RxWarrior's and a 800XCSP Polaris, Glare Ice will make it happen within 1-2 miles. You only need the heat exchanger if you pipe it.
