I cut my slots out over the windows to accommodate the tunnel protectors. While I was at it, I cut the center lugs down a 1/4" and put 144 1 1/4" studs down the center. I get way more traction than a stock track and still have studs for ice and hard pack, which is most of my riding in the lower midwest. The outside lugs are still 1 1/4". It is more work than most want to do, but it is the best of both worlds for me. If you're riding in areas where you need studs for control or braking, you will never get used to riding without them (not to mention the safety issues).
