For the thousandth time right??? On hard pack trail which will hook better? 9830 w/ 168 studs, or ripsaw with no studs? I don't mean glare ice, just typical hardpacked wisconsin trails. I just can't make up my mind. I have always ran studs and love them. I may be willing to go to the ripsaw if it will hook better than the 9830. I just don't know if I can make the move to no studs!!
 
Well I have a 700SX with 144 studs. I just raced my dads 05 RX1 with the ripsaw and we were on hard hard pack trails. Not even 1/4 inch powder. He didnt spin at all and stayed beside me until 80 then flew by me. My 700 also has bender pipes, cluth. Ripsaw is the way to go.
 
My ripsaw track on my vipers s hooks great on packed trails,but so did my srx with the 9830 with 144 studs.The problem i have around here is their is lots of times i go out and the trails are icy and the ripsaw spins like crazy.I have 2000 miles on my ripsaw track and a lot of the lugs are torn off on both edges of the track,a problem i never had with the studded 9830.Next season im throwing the ripsaw in the garbage and am going to run a studded 9830 track.
 
I would venture to bet a properly studded track is similar in accelleration to a ripsaw. The part that I am the most concerned with is stopping, and I gaurantee a studded track stops faster in most conditions. That is why I love the ice claw track. 1" lug, hooks up great, is lighter than studs, I don't have to worry about a stud taking out the integrety of the track, and I don't have to worry about hitting and ice patch and ending up in the tulips. A ripsaw does you no good on a healthy patch of ice.

How does the ice claw track compare to a regular studded track,ive seen the ice claw track and the stud doesnt appear to protrude that much out of the lug.I wonder how long it would take to wear the tip down.
 
I would say it depends on three things how much you are on the ice, how much road crossing you do, and how much you like to sipn your track it probably wouldn't last long with me because i like to spin my track but only when i know that it is safe. ;)!
 
I'm not convinced yet about the long term durability of those ice claws either. Look to be a real good idea though, and the warranty is always good.
 
If you ride in nothing but snow - ripsaw - if there is any ice or slick surfaces which i dont know of a trail that dosent - 9830 with 1.175 studs - wish you could run ripsaw with 1.325 or 1.45 studs in srx's & vipers - but you can't and keep your heat exchangers in 1 piece.
