Captain_Toyota said:You are thinking of the front-drive Celicas. Toyota made an all-wheel-drive Celica in the mid '90s called the All-Trac or the GT-FOUR.
There was a special option code for that car that got you the 2JZ. The vast majority of these cars got bought and used for rally racing and for road course racing in Japan.
That engine would fit in the AWD Celicas because those cars had the engine mounted in the traditional way in the chassis. Rathar than the cylinders running from side to side, like most front-drive cars, they ran front to rear, like a rear drive car. That is how the 2JZ fit.

yes, I can attest he knows about them old phazers. I will be asking you about them if I can ever get my hands on one for my beast of the east project.. I know about the gt-four. they should have made more of them and flooded america with them. the old celica got so long in the tooth and I never heard anything good about them just got outdated, kinda like the polaris wedge. nothing wrong with it, just everyone else had surpassed it

Hey, I bought one of them SR5-TURBO trucks. That thing was pretty cool, until it rusted all over the place. I only had to put one clutch in it. I really liked that truck. Doug

Im pretty sure it was the turbo version. It wasnt a twin turbo like the Supra, it was just a single.Junior said:holy s#!t

You dont really get to wind up a rally car, and twin turbos would be a little bit too much power for racing on dirt roads.
Also, when you run twin turbos, its mostly for more top speed on really long runs. You tend to have such a huge amount of turbo lag that it kills you off the corner acceleration.
Ive seen 100+ hp Supras that were built up for drag racing that run the 1/4 mile in 10 seconds but you almost cant drive them on the road because the turbo lag makes them undrivable at partial throttle.
That 2JZ engine is pretty amazing though. People are getting over 1000 hp out of them with the stock block and crank.

ya I've seen supra's do amazing stuff to, that's why I own one, lol
just a 7mge tho, not a J block, have lines on both 1J and 2J blocks tho, but that involves going down the road of heavily modifying a vehicle, which isn't something I really wanna do with my daily driver again, been there, done that, and there's compromises that inevitably take place, and I frankly enjoy how refined the supra is.
in any case, I must assert my masculinity, toyota is the ONLY japanese manufacturer worth a damned thing in my opinion. mazda was once a force, they made terrible production vehicles, but had great ideas and are the only japanese manufacturer to win the 24 hours of lemans (to my knowledge, never dug that deep tho, could be wrong)
but the supra is a damned good GT car, the catch is with a sticker price of 2x a mustang or camaro, how do you expect to sell them?

The Toyota GT-ONE came very, very close to winning at LeMan back in the late '90s. I believe it was in '97 they were leading with less than an hour to go and the tranny blew on the lead car.
As far as the ranking of Japanese cars in my opinion, Mazda and Nissan dont even exist anymore in my opinion.
Mazda is owned by Ford, so I wont own one of them. Nissan is owned by Peugeot (a French car company).

ya peugeot blows, no doubt there, and the only thing I think ford is good at is full size pickups, which they make an awesome unit for.
as far as the SI goes.... d000000d, front wheel drive is wrong wheel drive as far as I'm concerned, else I'd be in a celica.

Bland??? How do you figure? Toyota has been using more an more European styling on their cars in recent years. If anything, they are now less bland than they were in the past. Take a look at www.toyota.com and you will see what I mean!03viperguy said:toyotas are getting bland as of recent
