Correct way to tow a sled?

take off the belt.

if you have another person, have them steer it; tie the sleds bumper to bumper


tieing to a ski will make the sled follow, but always a little leary of constant stress on the steering system
 
Assuming having a person to steer towed sled.....

remove belt,
if possible loosen towed sleds track,
rope from rear bumper of tow sled to front bumber of towed sled.
 
we always tow to the skis so that the sled can follow on its own, and a person doesn't need to be on it so that its easier for the sled to tow it.
 
4 point towing system is by far the best way to go. Gets the towed sled right up close, and it follows wherever you go even up and down steep hills.

The buddy tow with runners works real well. If you don't have that system take the belt off like mentioned above. It can help to put more tension in the secondary of the towing sled if you havr to go very far. Towing a sled can make your belt slip a lot if you don't.
 
It is tough enough towing a sled... adding the extra weight of a "rider" (200 lbs or more) is crazy. We use bumper to ski loops of towed sled, no rider and remove drive belt. Sled tracks great at any speed, just allow room to slow down when you have to stop if you're towing fast.

Haven't used the tow rope in a while, last sled I towed was a AC ZR 500 two years ago (primary clutch broke apart into a few pieces).
 
we actually had to tow back a 2001 vmax 600 last weekend because a stud went through the front exchanger. Nice green trail from that one.
 
Having towed a few cats and one doo in the last few year (riding buddies call me the "tow-truck" I usually just use a 2 foot tow strap bumper to bump and have them ride the towed sled with there belt removed. I also whip out the tool kit quick and toss in a Silver secondary spring to get ALOT more backshift and belt tension to keep my belt form getting too hot.
