Was thinking about this mod. Who has this done to their sled and how much difference does it make? Who has the best porting/matched clutching? Bender,Hauck or Simons? What's your experince with this mod?

porting is all top end speed too benders porting is reliable and good claim 15 ponies seen a few sleds with it done satisfied people

i dont know if you will see 15 horsepower, especially on the 2000-2002 srxs, but it will make a difference. Simons and bender both do very good work, and simons will hook you up with some good clutching set ups to go with it. PSI and slp also do good porting.

I did some research and I would go with Mr.Viper. Don't forget some of these big companies give you just alittle. A guy like Mr Viper used to race srx's for himself (I believe) so I'm sure he knows how to get the most out of it. Just my opinion.

I bought the Racelogic porting templates and ported my own cylinders. Its not hard to do.Just have to be carefull when working on the edge so you dont flake the nikelsil.

The motor in my SRX is done by mrviper700 and I love it. Plus you get the added benefit of being able to talk to the guy who did your motor here on TY. Haven't had any problems with mine.

porting

14-16hp on srx, it involves porting the cylinders, machining the heads and a piston mod. It makes more low,mid and more top, its all the way thru, not just topend power. Dont believe all the old wise tails about porting, there is absolutley no problems with this work when done correctly.

MRVIPER,
How realistic is it to do this yourself? I can have the pistons and heads done by a local shop, but I have never done porting. Do you think it is worth the money to buy the templates and do it yourself? If so what tools are suggested/required?

Mrviper, how much do you charge to do the work? Can it still run safely on premium?

u can run safely on premium unless its race ported but then its not a trail sled as far as doing it yourself .......well the professionals didnt learn on good motors they have alot of practice under their belts and it takes a long time to do hence the price of it

MrViper700 how much do you charge for this? I might be intrested in having my 2000 SRX done.

lets look at what it cost to port cylinders

Sure, you can do the porting yourself, but , you need specs to do them to, and you will need the correct tools to do it with, your not going to be able to do it with a kmart dremel tool, you need a 90 degree head foredom tool to do the exh ports, transfer ports. The foredom tool is $399.00 then you need the motor and shaft for it, its another $400.00, carbide cutting heads $160.00. So then you need specs to port the cylinders to, those will cost a good $1200.00, why? because you will need to do cylinders a little bit at a time, then take the engines and put them on a dyno at roughly $350-400.00 each session to see if you did any improvment or ruined the cylinders. I am thinking about 90 percent of the people out there will not go the whole 9 yards to just do them thierselves, you see there is a large investment to get there. Then you will need to pay a machine shop to cut the heads for you and to mill the pistons-about $125-150.00. Plus your gonna have to have a spec to set them up at!

The second option you have is to send them out and have them done by someone who already took the financial plunge to do cylinders, I do them for $400.00 for all 3, includes porting cylinders, head machining, piston mod.
They run on pump gas, and will run on pump gas all day and week long, these specs have absolutley no problems. If you want information on getting them done pm me and I will be glad to help, I have race specs and hot trail/semi lake race specs I work with. thanx

Don(mrviper700) ported my sled this year and it ran strong for 2000 trouble free miles. For the price he gets I feel that this is the best bang for the buck you can do. Not only that but he is a hell of a nice guy and will help you to no end to get your sled dialed in right.

Thanks for the pm's sounds like this is a good mod. I'm just looking at options because we may have a new Mach in the group next year. I do not want to stare at doo tail lights all winter. For now I have a bender can and cold air kit w/stock clutching. Have not had any serious competition in the group yet though. Do you think it would take more than a port job and good clutching for a mach w/ clutching? $2,500+ for a BB kit is kind of out of range for me. Let's hear about any Mach recipes THANKS.
