Last year I installed a Bender Fresh Air kit on my wife's 98 Mountain SRX 700. All this time I was wondering why I couldn't get the machine to go faster than 140km/h. This past week while up the lake at the camp someone plowed a road near the marina. Since there is too much snow on the lake to get any speed I thought here is the perfect chance to diagnose the sled on ice by doing some clutching etc. I screamed down the plowed road, rpms were around 83-8400 and the dream meter was climbing hard. Then all of a sudden, once the sled hit 140km/hr it was like hitting a wall and would not go any faster and the rpms would drop. I pulled the Bender foam off of the airbox (the one that seals the airbox from getting under the cab air). I went for another run and the machine did 180km/hr just like nothing. Not bad for a 136"/1.5" paddle. The mid height windshield creates a vacuum and does not allow the carbs to suck in enough air therefore cutting out the motor.
I installed the Bender kit just for breaking trail and powder because the machine would bog because snow would get on the pipes causing steam to go directly into the airbox. Since then, the machine would not go fast (I couldn't really find hard pack conditions to really test it because of lots of snow on the lakes so I just thought it was due to conditions). Also the machine was harder on gas and oil.
Anyway, to those of you who wish to install a Bender Fresh Air kit beware and keep this in mind. I sold the sled yesterday and picked up a non-current fully loaded 04 Mountain RX-1. Now that the MSRX is running so good...I really miss it already!!!
