84 phazer problem

Unfortunately that is the way some shop mechanics operate these days- replace parts until it runs correctly. And sometimes they leave all the parts on and charge the customer. "We got it fixed. We had to replace the carburators, the coils, the pistons, the stator, and the CDI box. The bill is $1,800."

Im with 800 seen that happen before. the little rubber plugs in the wrong spot you wouldnt think you would plug pilot tube.but need to.

Had the same problem, sled ran great first few times then would not rev over 5000-5500 rpm, and with a fully modded engine i would expect alot more. Well eventully found out the seal on the Y pipe had broken off, my mechanic said thats why i had no power over 6000 rpm.

Throttle override system

I had several Phazers that had a similar problem and I found the Throttle Override System was screwed up. Don't know if they had that on an '84 but if it does, you can disconnect it to test it. Good Luck!!

I'm not sure about the electrical setup on your sled..... I had a problem years ago on a 1974 El tigre that sounds like yours, it was the excitation coil ?. It took a while to find that problem. The dealers couldn't figure that one out either. I had to with no internet!... Good luck!

Ding,
I have do not have any update to tell or good news yet.

I have been concentrating on rebuilding a kitty cat for my kids the last month or so. The people I bought it from I think used it for a passifier for there kids and didn't give them supervision. The cowel was cracked and stuff so I am replacing it and replacing some other stuff I want it to be in good running shape before my kids are on it. The thing runs great.

I will be back on the Phazer soon and will try with a vengence to find it. I really would like to get this running. If any one is in the NH area that is very good at trouble shooting the old yamis. Let me know. May someone would take a look? These are not the easiest for many people. I think it is going to take someone who has really seen a bunch of these to fix it?

Have had no luck yet! Still would like to fix. Do not know about the y-pipe thing or not. 84 Phazers did not have TPS or throttle sensors 85 and newer did. I just do not know what to do. It will still to this day fire up like a shot but not rev. This is dissapointing. I would love to have this sled back as the extra machine. I debated on selling the phaser and keeping my 800 I just sold to a friend, but figured that keeping an 800 for a spare could get someone who would be riding a spare hurt! It is not for the timid. replaced with a 1000 for this winter. Still if anyone is in or knows anyone good at the old yamaha's in the NH area please let me know? Ii still feel it would be something stupid for the right person who knows these things. It may not be common but must be definitely a simple stupid problem. It starts and idles way to good! Runs great until you start to get on it.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions over the past months.

Pressure Test Crankcase

Guy's really good input and I have seen many of these fixes work. So if all of these things have been checked and seem OK I have one thing to share. We had one in the shop that showed similar signs as this and after doing the carb cleaning and wiring checks the problem still persisted. The last test we did was pressure testing the motor. The intake and exhaust ports need to be sealed of with gasketed plates or expandable plugs. Once this is done you pressurize the crankcase through the fuel pump vacuum fitting using a gauged and a air source with a check valve to hold the pressure. I think Yamaha said you could pressurize to 8lbs?? We use to go upto 10lbs when new seals were installed. Anything more then this you run the risk of popping the the seals. Anyways we did this and there was a noticable leak. We checked the PTO seal with soapy water and found it OK as well as base gasket carb flanges etc. We couldn't find it and assumed it was the mag. side seal. We pulled the stator assemby apart and checked it with soapy water. I was OK! HHMMMMMM With all this soapy water everywhere we notice bubbles on the crankcase. Not where the cases join but on the casting. There was porosity in the case and after time it started to suck air the motor would lean out and not rev. We epoxied the case and the problem went away.

Good Luck the 84 Phaser was a fun sled to ride.

Yeah, the leak-down test is a good test. Skidoo puts the procedure for their sleds in the service manual if you wanted to see an example. It is a pretty easy test to do, and can tell you a lot about all of your seals. I have heard of cases leaking through the casting but have yet to see it myself. Great input 535!

Vmax535 and Ding, Thanks for the input, I will try this and see. I may not be able to get to for a week or 2 but will give it a shot. I have also heard of crank case leaks but wouldn't have figured it happening on this I will contact the shop that had it and ask if they did it also. I will check into the skidoo service manual for the example. Sound like it could be a possibility?
Thanks again

Back to the begining, it ran fine till you had the carbs serviced. I told you you could bring it over and I'd fix it but you're too far away so just pull the carbs and throw them in a box and send em.

800 IS right
I run a service shop and run into it alot, someone can't figure it out and you have to step back and look, when did the problem START and what was done THEN, If it started after cleaning carbs something is wrong in the carbs or hooked up wrong JUST start over don't think because it was already done that it was done right.
