using to much oil

does anybody ever had a problem with using to much oil?
going through a tank of oil every ride
I got the oil pump linkage set to the book specs .75 to .81

any ideas would be great
 
Make sure you set your throttle cable free play to spec, I believe it is 1-2mm at the throttle. If there is too much free play it makes a big difference in your oil consumption. There is no free play in the oil pump cable. Therefore if you have too much free play in your throttle cable, you are increasing your oil output before you even start to open the carb slides. This is often over looked and can make a substantial difference.
 
You must first make certain the throttle is adjusted correctly, then adjust the oil pump cable. I found the pump was on too much even when at idle. Good luck ! :lol:
 
Setting for reduced oil consumption.

Set your idle speed to specification (prior to throttle free play).
Set your throttle cable free play to specification.
Set your oil pump cable on the long side for lower consumption.

My wifes XT500 went through oil like crazy and the pump was set on spec. The throttle cable free play was way off and the oil pump cable was set on the short side of the spec. I adjusted the free play and set the cable on the long side of the spec and it reduced the consumption by at least 30%.
 
I know the recommended free play is 1-2mm, but what exactly does this mean?......

Does it mean that when you grab the throttle and allow the throtttle switch (TORS) to fully close first, then a 1-2 mm gap before carbs open? or...... 1-2mm gap before the throttle switch (TORS) closes????

This isn't very clear to me....I just finished adjusting my oil cable to the short side of the recommended gaps....I now wonder if I have the free play correct and shouldn't have touched the oil cable adjustment...

If you set your pump by the cable gap it should be on the long side of the spec for reduced consumption.

If you have a 500 then there is a notch on the oil pump and the oil pump lever, hold the throttle wide open and align the notches. On my wifes 500 I aligned them just SLIGHTLY on the lean side.

The throttle cable free play is measured at the throttle lever. Just move the thumb lever until the slack is removed from the cable. The gap is measured between the lever and where it rests when fully released. It will have a picture of this in your owners manual.

Are you referring to the TORS switch in the lever pivot? Just hold the pivot point stationary at either position, the free play should remain the same at either position of the pivot. It just makes it easier to measure if it's stationary.

Make sure you set your idle before you set the free play. When you change your idle speed it changes the free play. Turn the idle speed up, less free play, turn it down more free play. The free play is just a small amount of slack in the throttle cable.
 
What is a good ratio for the oil consumption? I'm getting about 1 quart per 100miles (about 8-9gallons of gas) around the 200 mile mark I need to refill the oil tank.
