2002 Viper ER, How long does the motor last??

I just meant pipes on a viper, they seem to be finicky :( but the powervalve-less sleds seem to be ok for the pipes :)

Hope mine lasts that long it only has 1200 miles on it and i had a main bearing problem the dealer said he has only had one other sled that had this so it is probably just a fluek but this fluk costed me a half year of riding but the old 01 pahzer came out and picked up the slack those are great sleds. ;)! :yam:

I would guess it was the bearings between the center cylinder & the mag cylinder, I know of a few that had problems because of coolant leaking by the impeller drive seal.

Had a center crank bearing go out of my 2002 Viper with 1800 miles on it. Dealer said that it could not have been stored correctly. ( I bought it used last fall) The rods had a slight rust color to them. The sled was mint, very clean. I was running about 65mph when it just stopped dead. First time I have ever lifted the hood open while riding a Yamaha. Dealer said he has not seen very many crank bearing failures.Did not damage any other parts. Replaced bearing. Pistons and rings were still like new. Runs excellent now! I will now make it a practice to properly fog and oil my machine when storing it, including the fuel system.

good call about proper storage, it really makes a LOT of difference out on the trail. rather ride than wrench. although I am starting to want to wrench.... so I am looking for a second machine to do so on :) still want a reliable sled for the trails :)

The motor runs but it has a slight scraping noise coming from it. The compression is 110-125-125. We are going to the dealer Sat. AM and their head mechanic is going to listen to it run. It doesn't really sound that bad but when you listen to it compared to my brothers 02 Viper there is a noticable difference. His is really quiet and smooth and mine is smooth and scratchy.... We noticed the power falling off a little on our last trip and after fouling a plug decided to check the comp. We want to have it checked before we grenade the motor..... At 1200 miles it shouldn't be doing this. Always ran good gas and use Klotz oil.... My brothers comp is 125-135-135 so we figured something's up.. We had the carbs cleaned and the power valves cleaned and adjusted just before the season.... :o| :o|

We usually go to a dealer in Pennsylvania because living in Conn. the dealers are few and far apart we have been dealing with these guys for over 10 years and love it too bad they just burned down in a 12 million dollar fire in Feb. But they bought out the skidoo dealer across the street and are working out of there while they rebuild. LOL...

your compression numbers really aren't bad though, and with them being so consistent i highly doubt it is a top end problem.
