Jetting for bender pipes

I installed bender tripples on my 98 sx 700 with 150 mains and 52.5 pilots and needles in the 4th posionon on mag and center cylinders. Sled runs fine wot, with good colour on plugs, however part throttle creates rich running. I have a tempaflow which i never installed, would installing this clean up my bottom end, or should i go to 50 pilots and then install the tempaflow. Thanks for any and all replies.

This seems to work well, but if you are running the mag at 4 I am not surprised it is rich.
the needles are for mid range (your problem area) Some people say to run clips at 2.5/3.5/2.5, but use caution, because the mid range is when most will blow up (if they hit a lean spot) this can happen after coming down from wot or running mid for long time. Like anything--How much do you want to play, tune and re adjust. My set up works well, but I would say its a touch rich. Some people run 147.5 mains also--again, you are taking a risk with all of this.

Start by changing your mag from 4 to 3. This is a big difference. You can also shut off your carb heaters and remove your snow filter (in proper conditions) and that will lean it just a hair. I have run my set up down -25f with no problems, but that tells me it is to rich for the majority of the riding in the teens for example. CAUTION: the 2001 sxr will run a leaner main jet, because of the internal tube/vent for the carberator. I tell everyone do not assume that a 97 and 2001 are the same set up --Yamaha changes little things every year...sometimes for good reason, but some times for sport.
Again, I would try my set up check the plugs and move forward.

Thanks for the reply. i will try that. Also my fuel screws are at two turns out. I havent tried much testing as of yet, but hopefully soon. We have more snow now, than for quite a few years. Thanks again.
 
My clutching consists of red max performance red spring, 89ls with 2.4 rivets, 51/43 hauck helix, stock secondary spring 70 degrees. Im gonna bump wrap to 80, as there is lots of powder around. I also have a 22 tooth sprocket, that im gonna try after i get the carbs closer dialed in.Engagement is a little high, 47oo, so im gonna try stock with 2 shims, as i read that its hard on sheaves,with a high engagement ,although i did change the moveable sheath last year.

I would consider another weight (vs 89L) unless you are simply drag racing. I ran that set up, and zero to top speed was a rocket, BUT if you go into a corner and hammer coming out you will get major bog. Just sharing my experience.

Also, I did a carb follow up last night. As I said I have ran that set up well below zero. Yesterday it was 25deg. and thick. I ran WOT and shut down after a good quarte mile. The plugs all looked good. They were chocolate, but the mid was the darkest.

Also - FYI , be sure your plugs have a good 25 miles on them before you try and Read them or your results may be misleading.
 
When i was checking the plug color, i m using last years plugs. Also i had the carb heat on as there was lots of snow dust and powder, and im sure i never shut the carb heat down. Im gonna change the needle position and post from there. I never noticed any bog, but i did have some some reluctancy to backshift at 50mph and thus im changing my wrap. Top end mph doesnt interest me, i just want it to be responsive and quick. On a side note, im kinda sad of the sound of the pipes, doesnt seem much differnt than a bored out silencer, . Bleueja17, do you run tempaflow?

No I do not run Tempa Flow, but If I were to hold onto the sled I would.

I realize the pipes are not loud, but be happy, because they are really cracking down.

The back shift issue-- It may be the same problem we are describing different--after all I may be rolling out of the corner at 50mph. I spoke with sled at length, and he had the same issues with the 89l.
I run the stock weights loaded down, 2 shims, w/sil/w and 51 43 ---I t runs well, but could improve--especially belt slip when cold--all is well when hot.

In theory--If you can get the stock single to run at a 8200 rpm, Bender feels the triple pipes will simply raise the rpm to 8600 neighborhood & add 51/43---Not that simple but will get you in the play ground..Problem is the stock set up overeved BAD.
