sxr 700 head gasket mod vs shaving the head

i recently overheated and think i ruined a gasket. i had the one layer gasket mod and loved it.

for long term reliability i'd rather run stock gaskets.

will i see the same performance by just shaving down the head a little bit?

since i overheated it i wanna get it planed true anyways.

what do you think? anyone else done this vs head gasket mod?

I an surprised at this, because I have done 2 gasket mods with over 8k now, and no issues.

To answer your question you can NOT simply cut the head, because then you will reduce the "squish" area. If I were to cut my head ( I wouldnt --I'd re gasket with a clean surface and good cooper coat) I would have somebody check/cut the dome.

I think you were the 1 in a million with this problem..That sucks, but if it happens again I would say it was installed wrong.
 
I would think it's 6 of one and a half-dozen of the other, BUT it's a lot easier to add a gasket if you want to go back to stock than what it is to put the metal back on the head. :lol:

If you shave the head and run all 3 gaskets, you will see the same perf improvements. You will also have the same dependability issues. You will still need to run premium, and you basically end up exactly the same as the gasket trick. I doubt the gasket mod caused your overheat, and you can have a gasket failure with new gaskets and shaved head. Its just the nature of the beast. If you got it that hot, make sure the head isn't warpped, or you will need to have it milled anyway. Maxdlx
 
i hit the heat exchanger and blew a hole in it thats why it overheated.

now after repair i cant stop if from overheating.

only thing i can figure now is a bad head gasket or warpage.

the hot was so hot it turned the paint orange and the temp sensor melted.

i hope its warped and i can finally find a fix to my overheating
 
I have a 2000 SXR700 with two layers removed and no problems.
I even got a green light on this mod from a yamaha mechanic.
Use high octane gas and let her warm up good before you ride.

I agree with MM - You probably have air in the system. Lift the back of the sled way up,,fill coolant, and let air out under seat(you need to remove nots in your storage compartment)run and --top off--repeat, and you will be dialed in.
 
i've done all that.

lowered the back, raised the back, filled coolant in rear bleeder hole... warmed up... lifted sled on left and right... etc


still overheats.
