New York lawmakers passed legislation in June that affects snowmobilers on public trails in four ways.

First, the snowmobile speed limit is set at 55 mph for most trails statewide. Prior to this law, New York had no speed limit on snowmobile trails.

Second, there is a new “trail development fee” of $45 for snowmobile-club members and $100 for non-members, payable on registration. The fine for operating an unregistered snowmobile has jumped from $100 to $200.

The bill also bans riders younger than 14 from riding without an adult and without a snowmobile safety certificate.

An estimated 85 percent of the 10,000 miles of trails statewide are public and will be impacted by the new laws.

trail development fee! that is way to much and way out of line,so if im not in a club i am punished to pay double.i belonged to a club and was one of the to few who busted there A**es to keep the trails open,mean while the 1/3 of the rest the club members just took advantage of the network of trails that i and a chosen few work our butts off to maintain.this fee is a fancy way of saying we want your money but you get the same results.a 55 mph speed limit is a good thing but only if there is enough police to enforce it,and with the shape erie county is in that doesnt look to promising.Also if they want put a ban on anything it should be a age verification on the size sled a younger person can ride,very much like with quads and watercraft.also make it a mandatory safe riding course MUST! be taken on all new purchased sleds regardless of age.i have been involved in this sport since i was 6,and now at 41 it doesnt look like to much more before i leave the sport.snowmobilers need to wake up and someday realize that they are judge by there actions,you get out of what you put into the sport,so if you like to go rip up trails,thats what you will get out of it:NO TRAILS.
and there is no place for BARHOPPERS in the sport as well,leave the drinking for when you get home,but if you took a safety course you would know that,it applying the thought that seems so hard for so many.....
jmo.it is coming to a very sad day for me here in ny to enjoy a sport i have loved and put many hours of dedication into for some others who are lazy and choose to abuse what really isnt theres to do so.and this why thease laws and restrictions are being put into place.
 
that is the way it is in NH. and our limit is 45, you should be happy you got 55 lol! although I think you development fee is higher than ours :(
 
you guys are lucky.....in my area trail speed limits are 50kmh which is 30 miles an hour. Our trail permits last year were 160.00 plus only $5 for a membership to a club.
Fortunatly my machine does not understand speed limits!!!!
There are probably few yamaha's here that know how to do 30 miles an hour.
 
I'd be selling my sled if I had to drive that slow. I guess we have a speed limit here on the NB trails. They don't enforce it though in my area at least. ;)!

Sounds alot like the laws here in Ontario, ...I just moved from Western Canada to Ontario and man this province is pissin bureaucrats, the laws in Alberta are much less anal retentive. I now have to ride like a "little old lady", pay through my nose to ride overgroomed trails and my 11 year old will have to sit it out for awhile. Not impressed #$%&*
 
well erie county ny is,in the toilet no money to go around....closing libraries,but keeping golf courses open,a real quagmeyer
 
Hey OZ welcome to Ontario.
You are correct in what you say but wait till you experience the Northern Ontario trails if you have the oportunity. They are incredible and are well kept.
