I have a 1997 700 SX that is in great condition. I purchased it in 1999 with 1400 miles on it. I only have 2800 mile on it now.

I started it up this year and road it around for an hour or so before putting it on the trailor and heading 4 hours upnorth. When I went to ride it, I started it up and let it idle and then it just died. I tried everything to get it running with no luck. After hours of wrenching on it, I determined with a volt meter that the spark was very very weak. After bypassing the ignition, kill, and TORS with no success, I decided to give up.

I dropped it off at a local shop because I knew that I did not have the time to work on it and the season was already half over.

I got a call yesterday and the shop is telling me that my Stator is bad. I was praying that it was going to be a short or some other cheap fix... NO SUCH LUCK.

The guy said that not only is the Stator bad, but by the looks of the hacked up screws holding it in, it has been replaced before.

2800 miles and (2) faulty stators??????

What gives? Does anyone have any insight?

THANKS

stator

I have never had this problem, but have heard of it before. I do think when all else fails som techs will blame this. I would be a bit concerned about a short/bad ground etc only because it is the 2nd one.

good luck

I'll request to keep the bad stator

I'll request to keep the bad stator.

Is there any way to test one of these while it is off of the sled???????

BEFORE u let them change the stator - change the spark plug caps :!: there are resistors in them ! they get rusty, etc & offer to much resistance - hence weak spark ! been there, done that !! Had SAME problem on my SX700 (now have RX-1) Was in the WESTERN U.P. MI. took to local dealer , they changed stator, next trip same problem. after much head scratchin / manual reading found out about the caps - u can get them most any bike /sled shop made by NGK .Was even able to get a little rebate from YAMAHA after complaining about buying a stator I didn't need  good luck 8)

I think you may have a bad ground. I have seen that on two sleds. Yamaha also had a problem in 97 with the wires coming out of the stator being pinched at the case by the flat plate that holds them against the case. I would check these out first.

There are very few things that can go wrong with a stator. Basicly you have copper wound around steel. The bearing could go bad or the windings or laminations could loosen up but this is rare. Most likely if the issue is stator related it will be in the wire connections. If some of the other suggestions don't fix the problem inspect the wiring coming out. Do a continunity test on your leads throughout the electrical system. I don't have any idea what replacement of a stator is but I'm sure it's big bucks. Well worth taking some time doing a little troubleshooting on your own.
