My speedo locked up & broke probably < half of the square key in the shaft. :o|

Any suggestions on getting that darn thing out of there??

Thanks

pain in the ***, happens from moisture getting in and corroding the the key. it is a finely wrapped wire made into a shaft like key way if you will. and will be alot of trouble getting out, take the axle out of the sled for best access if you dont take it out and break a drill bit off in it that will create even more problems. been there done that. good luck! ski

I was hoping not to have to take it all apart buttttt.................I guess I'll end up going that route
Thanks ski

The axle is drilled deeper than needed, so the rest of the key can be punched in and you may still have room for a new one...

yes grape is right, i forgot about that. it will depend on how much of the key is stuck in there. i am assuming you have the remaining part of the old key? buy a new one, compare lengths of old and new and post here. if there is just alittle bit in there, you may be able to just just drive the remaining key into the shaft. possibly only needing to drill an access hole in the bellypan accross from the speedo housing the size of one of the current access plugs on the pan. this way you'll only need to purchase a key and a plug. ski

make sure you check that drive shaft bearing in there while your at it, sometimes the breaking of that key is a sign that the bearing is going. I replaced a speedo key last year only to get a few miles down the trail and have the bearing lock up and then snap there goes another key...

Thanks hoffam19:
I did just put all new bearings in, along with a new chain, chain case (both halves), gears & all the case bearings. The head of the hardened bolt that holds the bottom gear on broke off flush with the gear & ground everything up. What a mess

Saved labor I did it all myself. Got the parts at a discount through a buddy through Maxx Perf.
Talked to my local dealer said he had a couple others do the sametoo tight tolerance on the gear & shaft.

I just rebuilt my chaincase too. had to get the case welded up, new bearings, chain, top gear, seals etc... fun fun... but now its done and hopfully wont need anymore work untill after i get rid of it or wreck it beyond repair or something...

my key didnt break but it stripped out and also stripped out the peice that the key goes into....broke the drill bit in there...got a new driveshaft from 780 and put that in. went to go tighten the bolt in the chaincase to hold the gear onto the shaft...@#$%ing thing is stripped out. guess i shouldnt have bothered fixing it....

i havent had a speedo in 3 years. broke the key off in the shaft and said the hell with it. i still know im going too fast so screw it, its just a number. ;):D
