Is it overkill to go from 136" ´99 MM700 to 162" ´06 Apex Mtn?

No, gas mileage is not a concern. Gas is still cheap here in Greenland and the size of the backcountry where we ride is somewhat limited, so it's not a concern.

Your weight/size could also be a factor. I'm not a real big guy (160-165 pounds), so I perfer a lighter sled. I can ride the bigger stuff no-problem, but it does require me to change my riding style. Just not as much fun for me. Bigger guys (225 + pounds) will really notice the added floation from the 151" and up tracks. They also have more body mass to work with, to throw a bigger sled around.
I've seen guy's buy their 100# wife a 151" 800. She get's on it, and struggle's to make do what she want's. Not enough body mass. Also seen the same gal on a 136" 700, and watched her ride circles a round the guy's!

Well, I'm not a big guy either, I weigh between 180 and 190, so I'm not too small or too big for either the Apex or the Viper. But still, what do you think about the difference in a moded Viper and a stock Apex?
 
What kind of durability problems are you going to encounter with triple pipes? Ive heard that when you pipe a Viper it tends to seriously limit it's durability.
I think you should give the Vector a serious look. About the same hp as the Viper with more torque, better durability and better milage. Also, you dont have the smoke and smell of a 2-stroke.

Moded Vipers are a lot of fun with lots of power, but not as reliable as the non power valved (NPV)700. The NPV 700 seems to pretty bullet proof to mods in the higher elevations. I have a buddy that ported and piped his and put 16000! miles on it before a rod went. Have you considered modding your MM700? Tunnel? Porting? Pipes? Lexan Hood? Boss Seat? 2-1/4 inch paddle track? Bad sled...
 
well being an owner of a NPV, piped and moded sled. I SAY KEEP THE MM. if it runs like my sx then its a great sled. i had to work some little bugs out with the pipes but now its fixed and i love it. will never sell this sled. and im sure the MM does great. my sled stock is 115 i think should be the same as your MM or at least clsoe. the pipes add about 25 HP. and its def a noticable HP. much more snappy and great acceration when you want or need it. i say keep the MM once again. plus pipes make it sound awesome.
 
I was kind of thinking the same thing. It sounds like Kris likes the MM. Im sure the Viper Mtn has changes to it that improve it over the MM, but do they make signifigant improvements? Im not sure.
Personally, Id go for a Vector Mtn, but I like 4-strokes.
Isnt it great that Yamaha makes so many great sleds that what to get (or even if you should get something different) is such a hard decision? ;)!

I havn't had the chance to ride an Apex, so I cant give you a "seat of the pants" opinion about it yet. I have been on a few different RX-1 mountain's, including a couple of turbo charged one's. The turbo's really haul azz! Feel's like the power is never going to quit!
I do perfer my modded Viper over the stock RX-1 Mtn though. For me the Viper is more fun to ride, easier to boondock with, and overall just more agile.
Those who have rode the Apex, say that handle's better then a RX-1. Not that the RX handles badly, it's just different then what I'm used to.
At this point I'll stay with the piped Viper. I really like it, I do a fair amount of drag racing, and it works well for that also. If I was to buy an Apex, I would need to ride one first to see how I like it.
So far no problems with the motor. After 3 season's with pipes, it's still going strong. IMO, some pipes can make the motor more sensitive to burn downs then others. But most problems can be traced to improper jetting or poor fuel quality.
 
YamahaHolic, They Dont make the SxViper or Mtn anymore in Canada.. well thats what i've been hearing.. i know all the 2 strokes are gone but they evan killed the thing! haha i got it the last year here in canada before the stopped it!
 
MtnViper, sure will! :WayCool: Just 2 months to go though, before I get the sled, but heck, just the thought of having a brand new sled on order, makes up for the waiting! ;)!
 
Sweet. When you go to pick your Apex up you will know you made the right choice when you hear that big 4-banger's sweet exhaust note. Once you ride it, and feel the torque of a 4-stroke, your old MountainMax will be nothing but a fond memory.

Kris, I'm a mountain rider and like you I have a 1999 Mountain Max Ok I wanted a little more stopped at the 141 for track lenth and did a side by side comparision with a 2000 MMAX 141 ok same engine setup track Results 2000 had better weight transfer it kicked my tail in the deep.. Humm ok bought a 2000 style rear skid with a ekholm tunnel 151 Ok tihis time same 151 track on a another sled Piped too this time Ekholm tunneled sled wins in the deep however with the skid only on the 99 it runs great!find a used skid pipes porting 151 then yer set and it's lighter. Jeff
 
If you ride in the deep stuff make sure you remove your transfer rods. Mountain performance sells a kit or you can do it yourself. It will eliminate your trenching problem.
