Is it normal wear and tear to have your drive axle bearings go out, or is it an indication of something not aligned, straight etc... Also when it went out the chain slipped around the sprockets. Should I replace the sprockets and chain or leave them.
probably just the bearing on the left side by the speedo housing that went out. they do need maintenance regularly. if not, that bearing will go out and will cause very bad things.
Was the bearing on the chaincase side that was really trashed. Replaced both anyway.

both those bearings are quite common (moreso the one under the secondary) because they are in the most vulnerable position in regards to debris and abuse. Replace the bearings, and if the gears and chain look worn, replace those too. Don't want to have to tear it apart again.

if one goes the added movement can cause the other one to go bad real quick.
4,000 miles were on the sled when it went. Speedo has always acted funny since I had it. Only reads about a 100mph when fully open, but I have passed people that say I was going way faster than that.
Don't get the OEM Yamaha bearings as replacements. You will have to pay $30 each or more if you do. Take them to an area bearings and drive shop or look them up on-line and have them cross reference the bearings to something they have in stock like a Boston brand. By doing this you will pay about 1/2 or less than what the Yami dealer gets for the same bearing.
go to napa $6 a bearing!!!!

you would think that greases the bearing, but it doesnt. just the speedo gear.bluewho said:anybody try makeing a seal behind the speedo mount and put a grease fitting on the base like a polairs has?

Exactly. That would only grease the bearing if you took the seal off of the bearing, but then you would probably push the seal off the back of the bearing when you pump grease in, which wouldn't be good either. Better to just keep it as a sealed unit and keep it clean. I take mine out every year and take the seals off of them, clean them spotless, and repack them and reinstall the seals. Has worked great so far.
