Machinist at Turbocam. We make bladed turbomachinery parts - centrifugal impellers for turbochargers, large air compressors, and aircraft engines - axial blisks / fans for small jet engine replacement parts and prototype engines. All parts are machined from solid on 5 axis CNC mills. Cool stuff - very interesting and challenging.

Police Officer in a small town in Central NY. I am going to retire in about 7 months. I have been doing shift work for 20 years and let me tell you it just gets harder as you get older. The trails are great here and get better every year. I pull out of my garage hop right onto the state trail that runs through my property.
Construction Machinist ...I fix DRAWBRIDGES for the City of Chicago!!! There are only 12 people out of 7 million in chicago that do this work... Kinda SUCKS if you need to find a job somewhere!!! Gary Oles nosboy We got 52 drawbridges!!! THE MOST IN THE COUNTRY!!!

Yes!!! WE are DRASTICALLY UNDERSTAFFED and do just about the SAME amount of work today that we did with 90 guys!!!!!!(20 years ago), sounds kinda SAD, But it was a LOT better job when i started in 1990!!!!! Im the big boss until MY BOSS comes back from vacation,,, I just started being the big boss a few days ago,,, so its REAL HECTIC and stressful!!!!! Kinda want to go out and get drunk and not show up tomorrow,,,but,,,,thats OLD BEHAVIOR!!!!!! It PAYS THE BILLS and keeps me WELL stocked up with TOYS,,,,so,,,,, I guess it works just fine!!! Gary Oles nosboy
we do all of our MAJOR REPAIRS in the wintertime when the river is frozen (if thats what you want to call it) so it kinda sucks when its real cold outside... Its not like you can drag it into a garage or start it on fire to heat up!!!! Like I said before,, its a good job until you fall into the river (been there-done that)... Kinda SUCKS trying to swim with your clothes and STEEL TOED WORK BOOTS ON!!!! The river is like 80% treated sewage, so you have to go to the hospital and get a round of shots in your belly, but, you don't die from it!!!(thats the good point)!!!! I fell in around August,1995 and it was 100 deg' that day... The rash lasted for a month!!!!! It amazes me what some people will do for MONEY!!!!! Gary Oles nosboy

Is there still a hiring freeze with the city?
...I need a new job badly.
a guy I know got a job DURING a hiring freeze!!!!!!! They haven't hired a guy in my department for 15 years!!!!! There used to be a lot of guys here and they keep having buyouts every 5 years... The Mayor wants to give all the jobs to outside contractors, so they can contribute to his re election campaign!!!! EVERY JOB THAT THE CONTRACTORS HAVE DONE IN THE LAST 15 YEARS HAD TO BE REWORKED AND STRAIGHTENED OUT BY OUR GUYS!!!!! NO LIE!!!!!! Its kinda pathetic that these so called engineers sign off on this GARBAGE WORK!!!! But, most of them DON"T know what they are looking at either..... WE have a couple of REALLY GOOD STRUCTURAL engineers, but they have deputy comissioner jobs now and they don't get into the field anymore!!!!! We don't have ANY mechanical engineers, and it doesn't look good either!!!! There isn't any schools to learn my trade and ther isn't any apprenticeship program. We learned from the "old timers" and they learned from the OLD timers when they were newbies and so on and so on.... There are about 50% "good guys" that you WANT to work with,,,a couple of good "gophers" and a couple of SLUGS!!!! They use the slugs for "shitjobs" and they try and not "burn out" the good guys too often... AS far as LOOKING FOR WORK.... Go to CITY HALL and fill out a BUNCH of applications for a BUNCH of different positions....THEY ARE ALWAYS HIRING PEOPLE !!!!! (they sure do fire them a lot) Just because there is a hiring freeze, it doesn't mean too much... I know one guy personally that got hired during a freeze!!!!
