I had planed on 144 down the middle now I am not sure, can anyone explain the pros and cons of both sides. I know this is old hat but I could not find anything when I did a search.

you can stud the outsides without a problem, its just more likely to tear. some have problems some dont. if you ride really tight corners in bad conditions you are almost guranteed to tear an outside stud or two.
 
studs on the outer part of the track are more prone to pulling out and causing some track dammage.
If you are running 144 I would only stud up the middle.
That is what I would do.
 
If you are going to stud the outside belts... I'd only make 2 scratch lines per side and have them 1/8" to 1/4" from the center of the belt. This makes your studs in the outside belts very close to the center of the belt which will be less prone to pull outs.
 
If you like your sled a little loose off, I'd leave them out & put 120 down the middle
That's what I have with a 6in carbide.
Works great for the feel I like.
Not too tight off & just enought to save my @$$ going in
 
I run 144 down the middle right now. Its a good trail pattern. Its 4 and 2. 2 double backers and two singles. But I will be switching to 168 (4-3 with big nuts) due to bending studds. We do alot of drag racing, but for trail riding it works great. This is with a 1.250 lug ripsaw and woody's megabites.
 
I always ride in very good snow conditions, never rocky or low snow conditions, and i dont spin my track like a donkey coming out of corners. On my '01 SX 700R, studs were in there from brand new, 0 miles. It is studded on the outside as well, with 192 Woody's Gold Diggers, and now with 5,700 miles, they all still look like new. Zero pull throughs, zero lost, zero bent.
 
my original track was studded with 144 patteren in the middle and out side edges 10000km no problems but the out side studs wear a fair bit faster the the middle ones.My new track i put 144 down the center and love it, like it better and would't stud the outside again
