pull cord grease

how can you keep grease and whatever the other black junk is, off the pull cord? i hate how every year after gettin my jackets cleaned, i still somehow manage to get that black grease on my jacket sleeve. i got the whole thing apart and want to fix it if possible. thanks!!!
 
When you find out the answer, let me know. I've ruined more T-shirts when working on them in the summer. It's always my upper right arm......

you know i THINK, not sure, but i think that that is actually brake dust that makes its way in there. Remedy: don't use the brakes ;):D I know exactly what you mean though, i get that junk all over me every year.
 
Yes, the "grease" is a result of brake dust mixed with any form of liquid that comes through (oil, water, melted snow, etc.). The update that addresses frayed starter ropes (plastic sleeve) helps some, but a complete solution would be to fabricate a pipe with flared ends, and mounting brackets that protects as much of the starter rope as possible. Skidoo and others have had many designs such as this in the past.

You could also change starter ropes frequently :(

hmmmm, brake dust in the starter cover.... i was firt thinking of doin something like ding said, but then i got to thinking. so the srx has the brake scoop, and i'm gonna make a modified one that will draw air straight from on vent down on to it, with a prefilter to hopefully keep out the snow and water, so waht if i just built a cover over the brake? so the system would go like this. prefilter on outside of scoop, aluminum scoop rams air down into fabbed housing shield which is surrounding the brack, and then out through a louver in the belly pan, or should it vent somewhere else? maybe this way i will keep it somewhat cleaner under there as well. next thing would be the clutches!!! what do you guys think? i mean, it solves the cord "grease" and it cools the clutch, and vents the dust somewhere else. let me know!!!
 
I used DOT Break cleaner to clean the rope every other ride.

I have the blue and white FXR race jacket and got rope grease on the arm sleave real bad. I used Citric orange biodegradeable hand cleaner to remove the stain (Hardware store). Then I used Oxyclean on the arm and rinsed several times and let dry on a hanger.

I have a 03, I don't think it has this PLASTIC SLEAVE? Can I just buy it and add it to help the dust and the rope from breaking?
 
Sounds like a nice little project. I wouldn't steal all of the incoming air on that side though. Just a portion of it should work. You may have to study the natural air flow so that the "intake port" and the "exhaust port" of the brake shield enhance the airflow instead of fight against it.
 
um, don't know if you missed the point here, but the dust gets down INTO the guard is what they said. so how far you pull it has nothing to do with it.
