How often do they need to be serviced? I have 3300 miles on my 01 srx and they are working fine at this point. Any suggestions or comments.
 
yup definatetly time to get them done. If you are doing that also wouldn't be a bad time to long travel the rear, the difference is unbelievable. ;)!

Long travel is using viper components in a srx right? Wow I didn't think my viper was that great, if your saying its a huge diff from a srx, then I guess I don't know what I'm missing!

i have ridden a short travel, just not a yamaha one. my friend had a 1990 indy 650 with 7" of axle travel, you could feel the paint stripes on the road crossings! #$%&* ;)!
 
its not that the short travel suspension rides bad. they are actually smother beign that they are valved and sprung softer than a viper. just that they bottom fast. if you get the stock shock long traveled and valved to your weight they ride great. s
 
I liked my old 97 600 sx. was plush, but bottomed too soon. after I sent the shocks out to maxx to get em long traveled it really rode plush and didnt bottom. softer springs and it was valved for my weight once I long traveled it
 
I have never rode a short travel yamaha either, always been polaris or artic craps so I was looking forward to my vipers 11" and well I can't tell much different but I have the early 02 non-revalved so my first order of business while the seld is torn apart is to get them revalved for this year from pioneer or maxx perf, hopefully that will allow me to see what I'm missing :)
 
I think the srx is just set-up very stiff. At least it was for me. The small stutters were a killer. Did the long travel, and as they said, well worth it. Give Bruce a call at Pioneer and he'll fix ya right up.
 
If you are saying your viper rides bad and you haven't had the shocks rebuilt, you definately DON'T know what you are missing. Those shocks are too stiff for anything but jumping houses in the stock form on the '02s. Getting them revalved will feel like you just put an M10 under it. I can't believe how good my buddies Viper ER with the revalved shocks rides. It rode WAY better than my '01 SX 700R even. My srx with the maxx perf. long travel rides awesome too.
 
Another thing that people need to know about viper suspensions is that they really ride A LOT better with the center spring cranked up good and tight. This keeps the suspension travel independent longer because the front arm doesn't collapse so easy. When the front arm collapses to a certain point, it joins forces with the rear to resist bottoming (way to early in my opinion) and makes the ride very harsh. If you don't believe me about tightening the center spring, try it. All you have to lose is the effort of turning it, and there is a LOT to gain given what vipers ride like in stock form.
 
mine has the softer shocks and it does ride better with the center cranked up. if i keep the pro action i am going to try a 2.3 strait rate in the center.
 
yeah, coupling has it ups and downs. now that we have it figured out they have a nice new set of suspenders that are jjust SOOOO much easier :) lol!
