hate to pee in the cheerio's but, without more volunteers and cost controls, pro sledding legislation and help from the business districts, and self policing our bad riders, i believe the near future may be just like the late 70's, mfg going under, clubs folding, lost trails, and funding, and people leaving the sport mass exodus. when the economy takes a crap first things that go are recreation and hobbies. my.02 ski

i think we still got time. maybe not in our back yard, but there are always gonna be places in the states to ride. hey, we pay our taxes as well right!!! also, might wanna go back and edit the poll and spell "well" with an "i" (will)

I volunteered just this weekend, it felt great. re-decked a bridge up in pittsburg NH. they said they seem to get a good amount of people working, actually have a crew that gets paid to do the trail work. also have an amazing system up there and it accounts for most of the winter income in the area, so that makes a big difference
honestly, more responsible trail riders and less ditch pickles would help my area. when people ride trails near houses with loud pipes and tresspass on peoples land, things get taken away. mainly trails and land permission. do your part to keep the sport around! ride responsible and dont do things that will piss off landowners!!!

I agree with Ski.
Here in Northern Ontario more riders are leaving because of the cost and there are less people to volunteer as well as protest about the insurance premiums. The insurance companies are doing a number on the trail plan insurance premiums and it must be stoped. The premium jukped from about 1/4 of a million to over 1 million in the past 2 years. That money had to come from somewhere...the riders pockets. Trail passes had to go up in price. This year with the price of trail pases and the higher gas prices we are loosing riders which means less money to maintain trials.
I dont think our governement realizes how many businesses rely on the winter season to survive. ALL ONTARIANS MUST PROTEST. Our clubs and the OFSC have started a petition to get the government invloved and help save our sport. If you have not signed yet what are you waiting for. Just think how we would feel if the OFSC shut down.
Thank you for allowing me to vent of the subject.

but at the same time, insurance went up because idiots make things dangerous by riding to fast and sideways through corners.

Yes there are some that ruin it for others but I still cant see how the justify that much of an increase.
The problem is that the second something goes wrong on the trail people think let take the OFSC to court. We have had people riding drunk and take the OFSC to court blaming them. The should pass a law that if you are at fault you can not take anyone to court.

I dont mind the extra $$ if you dont join a club. if you arent out there helping you need to give more $$ for the guys that are helping
and with the guys hitting groomers, there is a HUGE liability

I agree with Ski.... If we don't get a handle on the people that just bar hop and ride where and when they want to we will have nowhere to ride. Last year there were two 20 something guys at 3:30 am dragging up and down the road in front of our cabin man was I mad, if that is what the land owners have to put up with I don’t blame them.

Rex I Am Tottaly With You,barhoppers Suck And For God Sake Stay On The Trail.........

Sled riding in NY is going to be ruined. Not so much this year, but next. I know some state police officers the are being asked to patrol certain areas this winter to catch sledders, and clock their speeds. The 55MPH goes into effect this year I think. Sledding is getting to regulated. I have spent my last 8 years riding in Canada, until I couldn't cross the bouder with a pass port or a birth certificate. That is now waived. I am starting to think its time to plant flower in my 01 SRX and enjoy the view.

Just a matter of time.
Deep snow, off trail high country riding is not going to be available forever. While wilderness areas in Canada such as Revy and Golden will remain open to sleds much longer, several areas in the US are at risk of closing soon. Anything near the Yellowstone is under extreme pressure from the green lobby to be closed to motorized toys. Other areas in Idaho and Wyoming will not be far behind. Its a shame. Sledders don't bother grizzly bears in the winter and most big game moves down to lower altitudes as the snow comes. While I might agree something needed to be done about the "higher than LA at rush hour polution levels" in Y'stone park, I think the greens are now pursuing closures because they can. Just my $.02

03viperguy - I have volunteered to help clean up the trails the last 2 years. Man, it feels great to know you are helping out. I missed the September trail cleanup this year because I already had plans. The club told me that their contract with the DNR had not been renewed and would expire Oct. 1st. No contract, no insurance. No insurance, no groomers or trail cleanup. I haven't heard anything since then.
Rex - I agree, the barhoppers and yahoos who ride wherever they want to are going to ruin it for the rest of us. I like to take my wife and 4 daughters out on the trail for a nice ride through the woods, but I'm scared to death of what's coming at us around the next corner.

I dont think the 55 mph limit will be that big of a deal, in the northeast it is 45, has been a long time too. not that big of a deal. speeding still happens, hell I do it. I just choose the time and place a little more careful as the tickets go on your liscence

The speed limit on the trials here is 35MPH and has been for quit a few years.
No limit on the lakes.
There is always a handful of people that do really crazy things and it ruins it for others. We have way to many deaths here and they keep regulating snowmobiling to try and lower the fatalities. But there are those who dont listen even a little and kill themself or someone else.

confucious say ride with brains not your balls.I gotten pretty sick of the way people ride and the attitudes in my area, its pretty much a free for all.snocross wannabees who just beat the devil out of our local trail network.its thease kinda clowns that the authorities should make an example out of.and thease types are the one's who threaten to sue the clubs when there bodies lay broken on the snow, when really its there own fault because they left the trail..............
