Hey Guys
I got done work early today(Sat) and now am into the Bacardis after a few coolies to start off and was looking at some used sleds on the auto trader web site, here in Canada, thinking I'd really like to upgrade from my trusty 98 SRX to either an 01 or 02 SRX or a Viper S and put pipes on it.I almost ordered a Viper S after trying one out;it rode awsome and had the kind of trail power I figured I wanted plus it just looks cool but job insecurity held me back at the time. But I really love the SRX's and the DCS on the 02's would help protect me from engine damage.I guess what I'm asking is would a piped Viper perform as flawless and as well as a stock SRX over a broad range of conditions?I know the suspensions are different but with the availabilty of shops to custom tune shocks surely there'd be a setup to please me.Also once you start adding things like pipes to an otherwise stock engine it seems to open up a whole new can of worms but there must be a somewhat reliable pipe setup for Vipers out by now.
Now that I've stirred up that hornets nest I welcome all replies.Thanks.

i run a viper with out pipes... but from what i have heard, the performance is great... i just am not into changing jets and such when needed.... i like to rip and ride... so for me if i was upgrading to a viper/srx i like the suspension of the viper, but for the right price, an srx would really rock with a long travel front and maybe a transplanted skid.... that way you would get the factory whoop *** piped tripple and the sweet ride to match....
but again, there are plenty of pipes out there for vipers that would be alot less monkeying around to get out there... plus the looks of the viper, in my opinion, are sweeter than the srx's
my 2 cents.....

Here's my $.02.
A piped Viper will never be as reliable as a stock SRX!!!!!! Yes, some of the "bugs" have been worked out of piping a Viper and certainly the 04' and newer Vipers with DCS do have a little added security against melting down. Add a set of EGT's and you will know just how your engine is perfoming and even further reduce the risk of popping your engine.

anything modified will never be as reliable as anything stock. thats my thought at least
Three part recipe. 1.Buy Viper S and leave it stock 2. Enjoy many many troublefree miles 3. When finished with it sell it with better resale than modified sled.

I've owned my share of SRX's (6) and I've rode a piped Viper - the SRX would be my sled of choice - too many advantages over the Viper in my opinion - any short commings can be changed for the same or less money it takes to make a Viper equal to an SRX! - my 2 cents
I agree with Yammiman, for every piped viper that works flawless theres another one that has jetting problems. You can buy a used viper skid to bolt into the SRX for alot less money than buying pipes for the viper. On the flip side a piped viper will usually be faster than a stock SRX. It all comes down to the individual. Yes you can buy egt's, but you have to know your jetting is right before you can trust them, plus thats even more money to spend on the viper.

I owned two srx's(01,02)two years ago, last year i bought a new left over viper s.I miss the speed of the srx but i dont miss the ride.Although the viper s isnt as fast as my srx was,its fast enough in stock form that you'll still like it.The ride with the ohlins shocks up front and motion control rear shock work awsome. If i rode my srx in the rough trails like i ride my viper i would end up with(another)broken w arm and i would feel like i just got hit by a truck.IMO the viper s is a better all around sled than the srx.

i would have to agree with blueblooded, the 2 sleds are made for two different things, in my opinion the viper has plenty of power and if you want more you still have the option of putting pipes on. As long as its setup right it will run fine....
