Good point. I found this out the hard way about 5 years ago. I do keep the rods "UNCRANKED" these days.
By the way the new W arm for the 96 XT from Yamaha is beefer.
 

If your wanting a reliable loaner sled, I'd keep it bone stock with a few reliablity independent items;

- Bender head gasket
- heavier lug track ( should be able to get a 1" in without changing drivers)
- Clutch setup (check clutch setups in tech section)
- Top gear down one tooth
- I ran 146 mains at 3,500-5,500ft. without problems in varying temps.

The stock track on this machine sucks, ...a deeper track will make the 96hp. work for you (I went to 8T driver, raised the skid and installed a 1.5 challenger track). This sled stock is tough as nails as well!
