Even though I can't afford a new sled I can't seem to drive past one when I see it up for sale.
My understanding was that a stutter box was for a turbo'd engine to help it build boost but this polaris I looked at had one on it. It had a dial with numbers like a-m and said stutter box. The sled also had tripple pipes and three temp guages (maybe to monitor the individual cylinders???) and a water temp guage.
So I looked to see if it'd been turbo'd and it hadn't, so what would the stutter box do for it?

It has the same effect as DCS on the viper s and srx. makes the timing go into safe mode when knock is sensed. at least thats what I remember. just a safety for pipes and on-the-edge jetting really.

Ah, this was on a polaris. I think it was a mach Z or something, looked like it had been worked up a bit.

they are used like a timimg retard so you can hold the throttle wide open and when it's time to launch release the button. also heats up the pipes at the same time.Cat and polaris had this on the 440 snowcrossers.

brad, you are thinking of something different I beleive. directly from SLP's site.......
Avoid lean burndowns with SLP's Stutter Box. The Stutter Box senses what's happening inside your engine by reading exhaust temperatures, helping to prevent potential engine damage caused by an over-lean fuel mixture. The Stutter Box was designed as a carburation tuning aid, and a continuous monitor of fuel mixture safety levels. Interconnected with the Engine kill circuit, the fully adjustable box allows tuners to set a pre-selected interrupt point based on exhaust temperature. For example: if your engine runs safely at 1200 degrees, the EGT interrupt point, or EGT red line, can be set anywhere above that point, such as 1250. As you approach your preset mark, or EGT red line, your engine will begin to stutter, thus avoiding any chance of burndown caused by an overly lean condition. The engine will not die, it only stutters. Power is still available if you're in a corner or on a hill. The Stutter Box may run with a single probe connected to a single pipe, to monitor an average EGT, or run with multiple probes, one for each cylinder. In multiple probe applications, the box will automatically sense the temperature from the hottest cylinder. Function lights, one per probe, provide insurance that each probe is working. Installation is simple, with a power (or hot) wire connected to the sled's power source, a ground wire, and one connected to the ignition kill circuit. This system will stutter the ignition (cycled ignition interrupt) and cool pistons to help prevent lean mixture burndown. SLP has designed the Stutter Box to reduce the possibility of lean burndown.

Stutter box is an old drag racing term, it has meant what Brad was originally saying for alot longer than SLP has been around, cool unit they are making tho.
but traditionally stutter box is a launch assist device.

Actually I was talking about the SLP thing. I didn't mention it earlier but it did have the SLP name on it. So that answers my question, that also answers why he had three seperate temp guages. One for each pipe. I wonder if they make anything for a yami.

I saw the box Brad was talking about on the showroom floor of Pioneer Motorsports (Bruce Schrader) 2 years ago. It was on a Polaris ProX-440 with Walker Evans shocks Sno-X sled if I remember. I asked the guys what the dial indicator was for as it had 2 of them. One for 92+ octane fuel and the other was a multi-dial not just on/off and it was for the "launch" mode. It caused the timming to retard enough to really heat up the pipe by dumping raw fuel into the pipe. They said when you left the line you had a few more ponies than the guy next to you. I don't think they do it any more because they found out it was actually fouling more plugs than it was launching sleds off the line. We have all been there when you hear burbble burbble burbble..... DAM!! just lost a plug on my triple.... oh well it can still keep up with a twin.... BANG it backfires... Better change that plug... Doug

they still do it, but only on the 440 race sleds. all about holeshot. thought doo and cat came out with something similar to it...
